“Well, I didn’t know that, now, did I? I thought she was just a run-of-the-mill housewife.”

“Nope, not Laura. But she’ll never lie to you; that’s one thing you can count on. Laura is true blue. Oh, and you should move out of Dan’s place.”

Aghast, Shelly took a step back. “Why?”

“He’s got eyes for someone else, that’s why, and it doesn’t bode well for you.”

“The only place I have to go is to my parents’ house,” she shrieked.

“No, you don’t. You can always go back to Alan’s house.”

“I never thought of that! And it’s vacant now, too.”

“Yes. Visit Alan and make sure he’s okay with it.”

“He’ll never know, unless you tell him.”

“Whatever. Good luck, Shelly. You’re going to be looking over your shoulder for the rest of your life.”

“I’m innocent, so it’s no problem.”

They didn’t bother saying goodbye, parting quietly, Shelly’s nose in the air. After she grabbed a few extra cans of cranberry sauce, Hocus returned to her cart. Intervening was forbidden in soothsaying because you couldn’t predict what interfering in life’s processes might do, how it might change the course of one’s life. But if she’d told Shelly to get away from Alan before and Shelly had listened to her, Lily might still be alive.

Shelly arrived at Dan’s, seething. So! Who was her replacement going to be? She hauled the groceries inside, immediately regretful she’d ever asked Dan if she could stay with him. Why the hell was she even there?

The only solution was to get out, just as Hocus had suggested. She had to pack before Dan got home. It took her an hour to fill her car, and, taking what she’d purchased at Organic Bonanza that morning, she prepared to move out of Dan’s and back into Alan’s house.

Laura stood at the kitchen sink, telling Lisa over the phone about the encounter at the store and how Pam had caved and invited everyone to Thanksgiving dinner.

“A holiday dinner at my mother’s house is a feat,” Lisa said. “It’ll be good for Ryan to get out of the house among people other than Dan and Andy Roman. That’s a triad of trouble. And I hate to tell you that they love Will and are talking about inviting him to Kid Zone on Saturday. Tell him to be on call.”

Laura laughed at that. “He’d love it. Are you kidding?” Movement outside caught her eye. “Oh my God, it looks like Shelly is moving out of Dan’s house. She’s filling her trunk.”

“Where the hell is she going now? I’m going to call Dan,” Lisa said. “Talk later.”

“Let me know what he says.”

Dan was surprised when Lisa called. “I haven’t seen your number on my phone since you were pissed off at me for being late to get the boys,” he said when he answered.

“Whatever, Dan. Laura said it looks like Shelly is moving out.”

“What the hell! Goodbye.”

He grabbed his coat and saluted his receptionist on the way out. “I’ll be back in half an hour.”

“You have an appointment in fifteen minutes!”

“Order lunch.”

He raced home just as Shelly was placing a bag of groceries in the front seat. He parked behind her, blocking her way.

“Where are you going and why?”

“I ran into Hocus at the Bonanza, and she tells me you’re hooking up with yet another babe. I’m over it, Dan.”

“You and I have only been together a short time. How bad can it be?”

“Who is it?”
