“I swear I have no idea what you’re talking about. Stalk me and you’ll see. Are you going to your folks’ place?”

“No. I’m moving back into Alan’s house.”

“Alan’s house! Does he know?”

“No. And what can he do about it? He’s in jail, where he belongs.”

“You lied to the police, Shelly. I’m not your attorney, but be careful.”

She looked to the ground. “Thank you, Dan. I know I’m a target now. But I haven’t done anything wrong. Thanks for the break from reality while I was here. I hope you find someone who can hold your attention for longer than a week. Now if you’ll move your car, I can leave.”

He nodded, trying not to laugh, getting behind the wheel to roll down the driveway. When she drove past him, she smiled, but there was a look behind her eyes that gave him the chills.

Going through his house, he saw evidence that she’d removed her things, but he didn’t see any of his belongings missing. His phone beeped.

“Is all well over there?” Laura asked.

“You were right, she’s moved out. She’s moving into Alan’s house.”

They chatted about that turn of events for a few minutes.

“Wow, she’s got a lot of nerve,” Laura remarked. “Was my name mentioned? I’m sure she’s pissed off that I repeated our conversation.”

“Not a word.”

“Good. Go back to work.”

“I’m headed out the door now. Wait! How are you doing?”

“We just saw each other. I’m fine, Dan. So long.”

Laura ended the call, thinking it was definitely better if Dan was occupied with someone else. She keyed in the number she had for Henry Wong. After getting pleasantries out of the way, she got down to business.

“Can I have Samantha’s number?”

“Sure.” He rattled it off. “She’s around here somewhere.”

“Thanks, Henry. Talk later.”

She keyed in the number he’d given her, and Samantha answered. They chatted about the case and the apparent futility of trying to charge Shelly with a crime.

“I’m calling about Dan. Shelly moved out about an hour ago. I saw her packing her car, and Lisa Maddox called Dan. He came home and confronted Shelly, and she’s moving into Alan’s house.”

“Wow, talk about balls.”

“Yeah. Anyway, time for me to make that introduction. When are you available?”

“I can leave now,” she said. “Is that available enough?”

“Perfect. Do you know where his office is?”

“I think so.”

“Meet me there in ten minutes.”

Laura sent Will a text that she was matchmaking and would be away from the cottage for a short time.

She pulled into Dan’s office parking lot at the same time Samantha did, and they looked at each other and laughed.
