“Did you tell him we were coming?” Samantha asked.

“No, but I’ll text him right now.”

In the parking lot with Detective Samantha for an introduction.

They talked while they waited, comfortably like old friends, before the side door opened and handsome Dan came out without a coat on.

“You’ll freeze,” Laura said.

“Come in. I don’t have a client for ten minutes.”

“Dan, this is Samantha Cordis.DetectiveCordis.”

“Samantha is fine,” she said, laughing.

“You’ve been to my house,” Dan said. “I’d never forget that hair.”

They shook hands, and Dan’s display of boyish charm revealed that he was attracted to Samantha.

“I’ll leave you two,” Laura said, pointing over her shoulder to the side door.

“Wait. I’ll go, too, if Dan has an appointment.”

“Why don’t both of you go to Common Grounds and wait for me there? We’ll have coffee in the gloomy atmosphere of murder.”

“And soothsaying, if Hocus is working this afternoon,” Laura said, winking.

“I’ll be there,” Samantha said.

The women walked out together, and Laura stopped in front of her car. “I’m going to pass on coffee, if you’re okay meeting him alone. I have a bunch of work to do for a new client. You and Dan look so good together, I’m sure you’ll find plenty to talk about without me in the middle.”

“Thank you, Laura. I wish you’d come just because I want to spend time with you. But I understand. Can I call you later?”

“Yes! Please do. I can’t wait to hear how the coffee goes.”

The coffee date went fine. They ordered pastries with the coffee, and they were delicious, Adam Marchand’s baking a huge improvement over the luckless Lily’s.

“This is really good coffee,” Samantha said. “I usually go through the drive-through at Mickey D’s.”

“This apple turnover is good, too. I shouldn’t be eating it, but oh well.”

“You can eat whatever you want,” she said, winking at him and making Dan blush, which hadn’t happened to him in a long while.

“You’re cute,” he said. “I mean, you’re beautiful with your gorgeous red hair, but your actions are cute. I like you.”

“I like you, too. Did Laura tell you I asked her to introduce us?”

“She did, and I was all for it. However, at the time, I had a boarder.”

“Ha, you surely did. That didn’t last long, thankfully.”

“It was doomed,” Dan replied.

Dan felt instant chemistry with Samantha, but he decided he was going to turn over a new leaf and not be compulsive and jump into anything with her. Racking his brain for a moment, he wondered what he could do with her that wouldn’t lead to sex.

“Would you be interested in going to a football game with me tonight?”

“I’d love to. I love nighttime sporting events.”
