"Girl, are you being shy again?" Lindsay turns her attention to Daniel. "Please excuse my friend here. It's been a while since she's been in the presence of a man as gorgeous as yourself.”

"What the hell, Linds?!" My face turns as red as my sundress.

"It's all good. I'm not much of a talker anyway," he says with a low chuckle.

"Hey, Rome, I got something for ya." A short, older man enters the tent and hands Daniel three lanyards with badges. "Here are some VIP passes. Jacob said they're gonna be a while. He wants you to take the girls for some drinks and then swag tent."

"Who's that?" I whisper to Lindsay.

"Stu, the band's manager."

"Ladies," Daniel says, handing us each a lanyard. "Looks like I'm your chaperone for the night."

he says, the words clipped. Our earlier comfortable silence has been replaced with a heavy awkwardness. Is he pissed about being put on babysitting duty tonight? He certainly doesn’t have to stay with us; we’re all adults.

"I heard Stu say something about a swag tent?" Lindsay asks.

"You did."

"Well then, let's go! Amazing—free—gifts await!" She grabs my arm, pulling me out of the tent after her.

Walking through the dusty grounds, I soak up the entire experience. Crowds gather to listen to music playing on the small stages, dancing on hay bales, and partnering up for the night. The smell of barbeque wafts through the air as the contestants get ready for tomorrow’s competition, making my stomach grumble. Serious sensory overload.

Two giant guards check our badges and IDs at the VIP entrance. "Enjoy your evening, ladies,” one of them says, waving us through.

Like two giddy schoolgirls, we skip past them, impatiently waiting for Daniel on the other side.

The guard checks his ID but seems to be questioning him about something rather than just waving him through as he did for us.

After several minutes, Daniel is waved through and can join us.

"Everything okay?” I ask.

"Yup." There’s a tightness in his voice that wasn’t there earlier. Whatever the security guard said to him struck a major nerve. Daniel's face is beet red, and his fists are clenched. "I need a drink. You ladies want something?"

"Sure. Anything with whiskey," Lindsay says.

"Same."

Daniel stalks off without saying anything else.

"Okay. What is with this guy?" Lindsay asks. "His mood just changed like the flip of a switch."

"Right? And have you noticed that everyone else calls himRome, but he keeps correcting them with Daniel? What's up with that?"

"I have." She rubs her chin like a detective pondering a case. “I wonder what he's hiding from?”

"I don't know, but am I crazy for thinking the mystery around him makes him that much sexier?"

"Nope! Because I was thinking the same damn thing!" We let out a simultaneous sigh as we check out Daniel's ass in his perfect, form-fitting jeans. "Please tell me you're going to make a move on him tonight."

"I don't know. Remember what happened last time I made a move on a guy?"

"Okay, that guy was just weird." She laughs, watching me as if I’m going to join her.

That whole experience was awful, and I still don't see the humor in it that she does.

"Come on, Andi, you have to admit it was hilarious. Netted flamingoanythingis not right.”
