My anxiety heightens when I see Dr. Lawson walking out of Iris’s ward a second time. Without wasting a breath, I get to my feet and hurry toward her.

“Is she okay?” I ask.

“She’s fine. You can see her now.”

Relief spreads through me at those words. “What happened to her that caused such sudden, drastic pain?” I ask. “Is it serious?”

“You may ask her if you’d like but I’m not at liberty to discuss my patient’s medical history,” she says in a stiff tone.

I stare at her. “You can’t even tell me why she collapsed like that?”

“No, Mr. Solveig.”

“Wait!” I snap, injecting dominance in my tone as she tries to brush past me.

The lady’s gaze sweeps over me in a calculating manner. At that moment, I realize she’s an alpha too and unaffected by me.

Dr. Lawson stands to her full height. Even though I’m taller than her, she doesn’t cower against my dominance.

“Miss Collins isn’t comfortable discussing the matter,” she says in a stern voice. “However, I can tell you this much. She’s under tremendous stress. It’s exacerbating her symptoms. If you care about her, please refrain from pressing her about this issue.”

Guilt settles in my gut. I’m the reason she’s stressed out. I’ve been nothing but an ass to her.

“You can take her home,” says Dr. Lawson. “Please make sure she’s comfortable. She’ll experience such episodes in the coming days but with lesser intensity. It’s important to keep her relaxed.”

“But what happened to her?”

“I can’t discuss that with you.”

A growl escapes my lips. “Do you know who I am?” I demand.

“You’re Caleb Solveig,” she retorts. “Your family owns the hospital.” She sneers at me. “Even then, Mr. Solveig. You cannot force me to divulge my patient’s private medical records. You’re not even her family.”

My hands ball into tight fists. “She’s mine.”

Surprise flickers through her. An amused grin lifts the corner of her lips. “She doesn’t seem to think so, Mr. Solveig.” She gestures toward the doorway. “Why don’t you stop arguing with me and go see her?”

A part of me wants to spar with her to show her who’s the bigger alpha but my need to see Iris overwhelms the urge.

Walking past Dr. Lawson, I head inside the ward.

Iris is sitting on the edge of the bed and pulling on her sneakers. She looks up at me as soon as I enter.

A wary look comes over her as she straightens up.

“What happened to you?” I ask, cringing at the gruffness in my voice. My guilt stabs at me harder as she flinches. Clearing my throat, I try again. “Are you feeling better?” I ask in a gentler tone.

She gives a nod but stays silent.

“You were crying from the pain,” I say in a low voice. “The doctor refused to tell me what you’re suffering from. I want to help you but I need to know what happened.”

“My parents cheated you,” she says, lowering her head. “Why would you want to help me?”

“Because you’re innocent.”
