When he rubbed his knuckle across my cheek, I shivered but removed his hand, squeezing it in mine.

“Ya perezhivu temnotu.”

“Tell me what that means.”

“I will survive the darkness.”

“Not without your shining light.”

The way he was looking at me was both thrilling and evoking sadness at the same time. He was concerned about what he’d discover.

“Promise me that you’ll maintain silence. I assure you that when this is all over, you will be allowed to see your family as often as you want.”

“I will make that promise to you as long as you keep yours. My family is all I’ve ever known.”

“I understand, my sweet princess. This will end soon enough.”

Would it? No. We both knew it wasn’t that easy. This episode would turn into another.

And another.

He squeezed my hand then moved away, giving directions to one of his men. I stared out the window, the haze from the city lights turning ominous as a bad feeling settled in my stomach.

Danger lurked in the shadows and even with Sevastian’s level of protection, no one would be able to protect us from ourselves, the demons we held inside.

A single tear slipped past my lashes.

Would love be enough?

Sevastian

Kostya’s short message was cryptic, but my gut told me whatever he’d found concerned him enough to necessitate the visit at the airport. As we walked down the steps, I noticed a third vehicle waiting a hundred yards away from the two I’d requested arrive at the airport.

Giada noticed my gaze, her body suddenly trembling against me.

“Don’t worry. I was expecting someone. Wait in the SUV for me,” I whispered in her ear before nodding to Sanchez to escort her.

“Business?”

“An associate. I shouldn’t be long.” I waited until Sanchez led her away, scanning the surrounding area before heading toward Kostya’s awaiting rental car. When I slid inside, he tapped his index finger on the steering wheel.

“You’re late.”

“Unfortunately, the weather conditions were less than ideal. What is so urgent?”

“Since we last spoke, things have gotten more interesting. It would seem your instinct regarding the Colombians was true. Word on the street is that Rojas was given an invitation by someone in New York to join forces. I don’t need to tell you that some people are shitting in their pants, including the Poles.”

“An invitation?” I wouldn’t put it past Cesare.

He turned his head until I absorbed what he was saying. It wasn’t unusual in our line of work for two powerful entities to work together, but not a single New York crime syndicate wanted anything to do with the cartel. They came in like bulldozers, attempting to wipe their enemies off the face of the earth.

“It also seems their plans are escalating as to when they’re planning on rolling in,” he continued. “If I had to guess, I’d say your family has targets on their backs.”

“That was a given. I agreed to a meet with Diez in his country.”

His eyes flashed even in the darkness. “And he took that bait. No wonder the push forward.”
