“Any word on who made this overt invitation?” The nagging remained, my instinct working overtime.

“While no one’s doing much talking, it’s clear that the Italians have responded, taking out dozens of Rojas’ men, seizing several shipments. Arms. Drugs.” Kostya continued to stare out the windshield. “That’s not making Rojas very happy.”

“Which means they’ll try and retaliate by any means necessary. When did these attacks start?”

“Interestingly enough,” Kostya huffed, “right after your restaurant fire.”

Maybe the bastard cared about his daughter after all. The attack had not been what Vincheti had been told. He should have known better than to go to bed with the Colombians.

“Vincheti was pissed.” I looked away, trying to put the pieces together. If Vincheti was behind the attack, the fire had been about killing me, not his daughter. The family would have spent time and effort going after the Colombians, not Vincheti and the Italians. Cesare could begin taking down some of our territories during the crisis. A good plan, except he didn’t count on the fact the Colombians didn’t give a shit about the terms of a deal. The betrayal pissed Vincheti off.

“Have you thought about what that means for you and your lovely bride?”

If I was correct in my assumptions, the contract entered into with our family would be shattered.

Then the Vincheti family would be annihilated.

“We’re both targets, Kostya. That I already know.”

“Well, it would seem Rojas is taking out unwanted partners, blood already raining in the nicer areas of New York. However, he’s still in Colombia. That much has been confirmed.”

“Unwanted partners. Vincheti?”

He nodded. “Hit a few hours ago. What little I know is that they weren’t successful, one of his soldiers taking the second bullet.”

Fuck. My cat and mouse game had brought the war to New York. Damn it.

“Any other attempted hits? Any noise on the street?” I’d need to warn my father as well, although if I knew the man, he’d already found out.

He shrugged. “Not that I’ve heard, but most of my known, trusted sources dried up in my lengthy absence dealing with other business. Streets are abuzz though.”

My phone rang and I yanked it into my hand, my father’s number appearing on the screen. Word had gotten around. This was all out war.

“I also confirmed Diez is dirty. It just took me calling in an old favor. He’s been in bed with Rojas for years.”

As I’d anticipated.

“Fuck. Why didn’t we see it? He’s using the diamonds as decoys,” I said almost wistfully.

Kostya laughed. “Diez and Rojas played enemies to elude the various law enforcement agencies. They had an underground deal, crates of diamonds used as cover. No one suspected given their open battles.”

“It would seem Diez enjoys playing games. Why purchase the guns from my organization?”

“Arrogance. As I told you, the man is a real pig. He enjoys torture as a weekend activity.”

“He was testing the waters, determining how tight our security was,” I countered.

“Another educated guess is that he was planning on a quick and dirty theft but didn’t plan on you being there. That would damage our reputation.”

“Only if they took over New York. Diez on the move?”

“Can’t say. He went MIA over a day ago. Too many planes and ships leaving to determine if he’s on one of them,” Kostya said through gritted teeth. “However, with the amount of increased activity, it’s only a matter of time.”

“Then we need to be ready.”

“We, nothing. I did what you asked me to do. I’m out.”

Now I laughed. “The money will be wired to your account this evening.” I opened the door, wondering how in the hell I was going to tell Giada about her father. There were too many possibilities that something could go wrong.
