Cheers.

As the audience erupted, getting to their feet, I did what everybody told me to do. I basked in the moment, recognizing my fellow actors before taking a bow. While there’d been a few glitches, the night had been incredible, the performance sold out.

And my parents had been in the first row. They’d surprised me after all. I’d seen tears in my mother’s eyes, and she’d been the first one on her feet, her cheer heard over everyone else.

When the curtain came down, I fell to the floor, gasping for air.

“You did great, Candy!”

“What a fabulous job.”

“We all did great.”

The shouts were numerous, the entire cast excited. I was elated, happier than I’d ever been in my life. Then why was a single tear sliding down my cheek? I watched it fall before rising to my feet. This was just the beginning.

I scurried with the others, moving toward my dressing room. The flurry of activity was tremendous, the energy and loud voices like a marvelous party in full swing.

But sadness started to creep into my heart.

There were people everywhere, congratulations all around. It took me over ten minutes to wade through the number of people. When I finally reached my door, I sucked in my breath. My name was on the door. My name. Mine. I pressed my fingers across it, chuckling like a schoolgirl.

I opened the door, turning in a full circle then staring at my reflection in the vanity mirror.

“Candy. These are for you.” The assistant had been a godsend the last few weeks, keeping us supplied with water and juice, making certain everything worked as it should.

When I turned around, I gasped. There had to be at least three dozen white roses if not more. “They’re gorgeous. Who are they from?” A cold chill trickled down my spine. Was it possible?

“I don’t know. There’s a card. Where do you want them?”

“Right here is fine.” The scent was incredible. I reached for the card then pulled away, biting my lower lip and snatching it into my hand. I held my breath as I opened it, expecting to see the Walsh family name.

As soon as I read the card, I was unable to stop the tears from falling.

Candy,

You were incredible tonight. You are the star I knew you’d be. I hope you enjoyed my surprise. Break a leg every night and know I’m thinking of you always.

Kirill

His surprise. Why did I have a feeling he’d brought my parents here?

“George. Were these dropped off?” I croaked.

“No. A guy gave me fifty bucks to hand deliver them to you.”

“When? When did that happen?”

“Right after the show. I’m surprised you didn’t see him.”

He didn’t want me to see him.

Fate.

Yes, fate had intervened. I took off racing out of the room, pushing and shoving my way through the crowd. “Please, let me through. Just let me through.”

There was only one exit that he could go through connected to this area. I had to find him. Gasping, I took off my heels as the crowd thinned, running down the stairs and toward the exit. If he left this time, I doubted there would be a next.

Please let me find him. Please.
