“The car accident that claimed her parents’ lives?”

“Suspicious but nothing proved. After that, the Ghost disappeared.”

I had a feeling he’d left the country but planned on returning to continue his plan of revenge. “Find out anything you can about Detective Morgan’s case against him. If there’s anything of importance, let me know.”

“Will do.”

Fisting my hand, I stared out the window as Cassian made the turn into my father’s estate, the guards waving us through. The SUV was barely in park before I jumped out, taking long strides toward the front door. Whether or not his soldiers had any time to announce my arrival didn’t matter in the least. Time was ticking.

There were two guards standing by the front door, others in the distance. My father wasn’t taking any chances. When I burst inside, I bypassed any sense of protocol, prepared to hunt him down in the massive house.

I found him in his office as usual, toiling away on the computer, likely basking in his good fortune as well as ascertaining whether Volkov had managed to siphon off any holdings. He jerked his head up as I threw the door open, the expression on his face a combination of anger and surprise.

“You’re out. It would seem Bradley was able to perform his magic,” my father stated, doing nothing more than taking a sip of his scotch then returning his attention to the computer.

“Cut the crap, Father. Bradley is useless. I’d likely remain in jail until trial if it hadn’t been for Stephanie Morgan’s interference.”

He narrowed his eyes, sitting back in his seat. “I’m not certain she has any powers left in the field of law.”

“It would appear we were both wrong.” I slapped the single photograph onto the desk, planting my hands on either side. “I suggest you take a good look at the picture, Father. Then you tell me what the fuck is going on.”

CHAPTER19

Stephanie

Pain.

The moment I moved, a wave of agony tore through every muscle. As I tried to drift up from the ugly haze, I shifted again only to have a wave of nausea slam into my system. I opened my eyes, still unable to focus, my mind a foggy mess. Blinking, I still couldn’t clear my vision, but everything around me was pitch black.

A moan trickled past my lips as I tried to understand where I was.

Think. Think.

Drip. Drip. Drip.

The tiny noise was coming from several feet away, but it dragged at my concentration, forcing me to continue to try to focus on anything that made sense.

Then a horrible realization smashed into my brain as a series of images flashed into my jagged mind.

The courtroom.

The press.

After that… nothing.

A sense of desperation rushed through me, and I started to struggle, finally realizing my arms were shackled, the hard clanging of metal against metal as I thrashed from side to side creating panic. I gasped for air, trying to keep from hyperventilating.

Then I heard a laugh, deep and husky.

The same one I’d heard on my phone.

The same one I’d heard in the courtroom.

“There’s no use in fighting the inevitable,” he said. He. Sergei. The Ghost.

The real monster.

I closed my eyes, praying this was all a bad dream. Then I heard his footsteps coming closer, every hard pounding on the floor beneath me making me jump. My heart was in my throat, the moment of utter suffocation adding to the anxiety until I couldn’t breathe.
