Another clicking sound produced a harsh light directly over me, the ugly fluorescent bulb attached to chains blinding me.

“What… do you… want?” I managed, loathing the tiny sound of my voice. The bastard had taken me from the courthouse. My God.

“I think that’s obvious, little flower.”

Flower? When he chuckled again, the evil sound of his voice was exactly as I remembered from my nightmares.

I had nothing to say to him, but as tears formed in my eyes, I realized there wasn’t a chance I would get out of this alive. No matter how hard or fast I blinked, I couldn’t stop the salty beads from trickling past my lashes. As the image of Alexei’s face drifted into my tortured mind, I bit back a cry. Even the man who’d promised to protect me couldn’t fight this level of malevolence.

“There’s no sense in crying,” he stated as he inched closer.

Breathe. Think. Calm down.

“I didn’t do anything to you, Sergei. You deserved being punished.”

“Punished?” he roared. “You have no understanding of true punishment, zamanchivaya megera.” He walked even closer until his silhouette came partially into view. “Yes, you are a tempting vixen.”

As my vision cleared, I could tell he was rolling something between his fingers. He stayed halfway in the shadows as he dragged a chair closer to the platform I’d been chained to, sitting down and leaning forward. What the hell was he holding?

“I know you suffered.”

His laugh was bitter. “You have no idea what you’re talking about. You’ve lived a privileged life.”

“Shut up. Just shut the fuck up!” My exclamation echoed in the darkness. I fisted my hands, tugging at the bindings, the metal surrounding my wrists biting into my skin. “Don’t you think everyone has suffered in their lives? You’re not special.”

“Maybe not, but at least you had a family who loved you.”

His statement was bizarre, and I could sense that he was close to the edge. When he slammed his fist against something, I shivered uncontrollably.

“And they were taken from me,” I half whispered.

“Then we have something in common. Don’t we, little flower?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Didn’t your new boyfriend tell you the truth? Didn’t he tell you how I was discarded?” he snarled.

He scooted even closer. Only then was I able to see the knife he held in his other hand.

I thought about what I’d found in the file. “Whatever you’re talking about, I had nothing to do with. I’m an officer of the court. It was my responsibility to work on the case against you. You killed those two men in cold blood.”

“Yes, I did, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure of gutting your father as I’d intended.”

He tipped his head, grinning as I absorbed the information. “What are you talking about? My parents died in a car crash.”

“Yes, they did, but by my design. You see, I had other business to attend to and couldn’t afford to take the time to end things with your father properly.” As he stretched out his hand, I realized what he was holding.

The locket.

A wave of despair crashed through me as the horrible truth exploded in my mind.

“You killed them!” I shrieked, twisting and turning as I fought to get out of his clutches.

He laughed then pulled the locket to his lips. “I must admit, spending time with your sister was the sweetest moment of my life. Did you know she died calling out your name?”

“No. No!” Bitter, angry tears flowed, my mind trying to process what he was saying. It couldn’t be true. No. No. Please, God. No! “Bastard. I’ll kill you! I swear to God I will.”

His laugh continued and as he rose to his feet, he tossed the necklace aside, switching the blade from one hand to the other. “But I saved the sweetest moment for last. I’m going to spend quality time enjoying you. And I’m sorry to say, but the bastard you’re sleeping with won’t be able to save you.”
