Lucas pushes me and I grit my teeth, wobbling as I go down the teeny tiny hill. I’m moving at a turtle’s pace compared to all the other kids around me. I angle my feet to slow, making a pizza like Lucas taught me. My legs wobble, but I bend my knees, trying to make myself as small as possible so I don’t fall.

My sliding stops and I hover there, waiting for something terrible to happen. When it doesn’t, I rise and look over my shoulder, finding Lucas running towards me with a big smile on his face. I wave at him, feeling like I have won a billion dollars.

“I did it!” I shout while trying to turn around, my body sways and I stick my arms out, trying to balance. “Ah, crap!”

Lucas catches me before I fall and he chuckles, holding onto me while I wobble. “That was very good,” he says, poking my nose with his gloved finger.

“Can we get hot cocoa now?” I don’t even wait. I’m already kicking at my skis, releasing my boots which Lucas helped me rent from the store.

“Yes, we can get hot cocoa.” He grabs my skis and throws them over his shoulder before leading the way to the small wooden house in the distance piping smoking into the air. My skin tingles as I look forward to feeling warmth in my bones again. I have to fight off the need to skip in joy, so happy that this time I didn’t fall.

Never mind Lucas’s help.

I moan, feeling the hot chocolaty liquid assault my taste buds. Lucas chuckles and shakes his head as I lick the whipped cream from my nose. He holds his phone to his ear, calling Seth and wondering where they were and if they wanted to take a lunch break. I am definitely keen on eating. Who knew squatting for two hours and just trying to balance on two boards attached to your feet could be such a workout?

“Hey,” says Lucas into his phone. “Where are you?”

I take another sip from my drink, looking over my shoulder at the girls giggling at the counter while talking to a group of boys around our age. The girls look beautiful with their hair neatly braided into two pigtails. One wearing a completely pink outfit while the other two are wearing something similar but in white and purple.

I look down at my mismatched ski attire. The black coat is large, which makes sense since I borrowed it from Seth, who is closest to my size. Lucas had given me the bright blue snow pants from his mom’s stash as well as the goggles and helmet. I didn’t even bother with hair and makeup, knowing it would eventually get destroyed from the wind and snow.

I frown, turning around and stuffing my face with more whipped cream and coffee. I shouldn’t compare myself to others. Seth, Lucas, and Hunter think I’m cute. I think I’m cute. That’s all that really matters.

Although, I could have prepared more for this trip.

“Alright,” says Lucas, shoving his cellphone into his coat. “Seth and Hunter will be here soon. They just want to go down one more slope. Seth wants steak.”

I chuckle, shaking my head. “Is there even a steak restaurant around here?”

Lucas nods, rising from the couch across and dumping himself next to me, wrapping his arm around my shoulders. “There’s one just a ten-minute walk from here,” he says while nuzzling my cheek.

I giggle and bat him away. “Lucas,” I whisper as his other hand massages my thigh.

“Until then, I guess it’s just you and me.”

My giggles are stifled by his lips against mine, his hand digging into my leg while his other pulls me closer to him.

“Lucas Brent, is that you?”

Lucas and I break our kiss, turning to one of the red-headed men coming our way. He smiles, looking curiously between us while his clique follows behind, including the beautiful ski girls.

Lucas smiles, yet it looks more like a wince. Obviously, he doesn’t want to be around this guy, which is only annunciated when he doesn’t make a move to stand or say hello.

I wonder why.

“It is you,” says the red head. “I guess I should’ve known you’d come up here for break.”

“Hey, Marcus,” Lucas practically groans. “Fancy seeing you here.”

“You should have a look at this guy’s place,” says Marcus to a blonde girl. “It’s like a mansion. Lucas comes from old money and shit.”

I feel Lucas tense next to me and take his hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. “So, what’s up with you?” Asks Lucas through his teeth. I notice now, his smile seems to be fading. Fast.

“Nothing much,” Marcus shrugs. “Just having some fun.” His eyes brighten and he jerks his head back and forth to look at the people surrounding him. “Actually, we’re having a party tonight. You and your chick should join.”

So, I’m a chick now? I raise an eyebrow and look at Lucas, but he isn’t looking at me. I want to tell him no way in hell are we going over to his place.

“Maybe we can stop by later,” says Lucas. “Depending on our schedule.”
