RACHEL

It’s the next day and we are at the ski slopes. Well, I should say, Hunter and Seth are at the ski slopes whereas I… well I’m at the bunny hill. Which I am totally okay with. I have never been skiing in my life and already I’m thinking this will be the very last time I go. I would have been completely fine if they had left me at home with the pool and Netflix, but Lucas had insisted he would teach me.

“It’ll be fine,” I remembered him telling me.

It doesn’t feel like it’s fine, I think as I fall once again on my super bruised butt.

I hear Lucas sigh and grimace, knowing he’s probably getting a bit frustrated. He probably thought this would be easy and I would pick this up with a snap of his fingers like Seth or Hunter or any of their other jock-minded friends. Well, guess again.

I groan and try to lean into my ski sticks, or whatever they’re called. I’m nearly up on my feet when, of course, one of my skis slide and I’m down again. I groan and lay down, totally over it. We had been at this for at least two hours and all I could do was fall down.

Honestly, I’m not surprised in the slightest.

“Alright,” says Lucas while walking towards me. He had taken off his skis a while ago after realizing we were never getting on the big slopes today. Possibly not for the whole trip. “I think we are going about this all wrong. Let’s just work on your balance for now.”

I groan as I take his hand and he hauls me up. I wobble for a bit, holding onto him to steady myself. “I think tomorrow you boys should go on your own,” I say, frowning down at my skis.

“Nonsense,” says Lucas while grabbing my collar and sliding me up one of the tiny hills. I scowl at a five-year-old whizzing past me.

A freaking five-year-old can ski better than me.

“Really, Lucas, you don’t have to do this,” I say as he turns me around and angles me at a clearing. “So I suck at skiing.”

“You don’t suck.” Lucas sighs and points at the clearing. “Just try to make it there without falling. Remember-”

“Serve the pizza,” I say mournfully, rolling my eyes as I hear him chuckle.

“Yes. Exactly. This is your first time. Don’t be so hard on yourself.”

I sigh. “I just know this isn’t fun for you, Lucas. I’m sorry I’m holding you up.”

Seth scoffs. “I’ve been skiing hundreds of times and I will probably at least a hundred more. Spending three days teaching my girlfriend to ski is not the end of the world.”

My heart practically leaps into my throat as I hear “girlfriend” and nothing more. I can’t stop the dopey grin taking over my face and I lean into him, no longer afraid about falling onto my butt or making a complete ass out of myself.

“Girlfriend, huh?” I tease, poking him in the chest.

I don’t know if it’s the chilled air or if he’s embarrassed, but his cheeks go a bit pinker and his eyes dart away from me. “Yeah,” he murmurs. “That’s what you are.”

I giggle, feeling my strength restored and ready to take on this puny hill with all my might. I mean, I know Lucas and the bros are in a relationship with me, but I never in a million years would think they’d actually admit or say “girlfriend”.

Especially, knowing their whole jock attitude.

I pat him on the shoulder. “Well, it’s nice having such a kind boyfriend look after me.” I giggle, watching him roll his eyes.

“Alright, enough already.” he points at the clearing again. “Focus on not falling and maybe we can go for some hot cocoa after this.”

I nod and lower my goggles, feeling all business. Hot cocoa is no laughing matter and I take it very seriously. I just hope I don’t fall flat on my big, bruised butt again.

“Are you ready?”

I nod.

“Alright, get set.” Lucas grabs my shoulders, readying for a push.

“I’m set.” My hands tighten on my sticks.

“And… go!”
