“Alright, fine,” I whisper harshly into the phone. “When and where should I meet you?”

“I’ll text you the address. Be here within the hour.”

My eyes widen. “Within the hour?” I ask way too loudly.

“Miss Miller!”

“See you soon,” I hear Samuel say before the line ends.

I quickly straighten, nearly jumping out of my skin when I see Dr. Arnaud standing directly behind me. I smile brightly while shoving my phone back into my bag. “Why, hello Dr. Arnaud,” I say awkwardly. “How are you?”

She raises an eyebrow. “Did you not hear me call you?”

I point to myself, feigning disbelief. “You were calling me? I had no idea.”

I can tell she’s trying desperately not to roll her eyes. Instead, her head raises, andshe clucks her tongue. “Yourlunch time is over. I’ll need you in the basement for this afternoon.”

I nod vigorously. “Of course.”

I watch her slowly turning around, walking down the stairs. My thumbs twiddle around each other, not knowing what to do. The basement is boring. Doing some photography for Samuel’s firm sounds way more interesting. I feel myself slowly inching towards the exit. A twinge of guilt stabs through my heart and I feel like I’m being pulled back and forth.

I came to Paris to work at the Louvre; the most beautiful museum in all of Paris. Possibly the world, although I can’t say for sure since I’ve travelled pretty much nowhere. I worked so hard to get here. I shouldn’t be changing gears at the drop of a hat. I should be working hard to fulfill my dream.

But I don’t want to work in a museum when I graduate school. I want to be out there, in the world, taking pictures of people and places. Not cooped up here where Dr. Arnaud can cluck her tongue at me while Lauren mutters some snide comment under her breath.

I turn around and walk as quickly as possible towards the door. I can’t believe I am actually doing this. I am actually bailing on my internship. A smile comes to my lips and I have no clue why I’m suddenly feeling so giddy. I’ve barely started this program. I’m only a few days in, and already I’m leaving to pursue something I enjoy more.

My heart drops to my knees as I run into Lauren.

“Where are you going?” she asks, looking me up and down, before scowling at me.

I ignore her while I quickly brush past, knowing if I stop to talk to her I will change my mind.

“Hey!” Lauren shouts and I groan as I hear her footsteps chasing after me. “Where the hell are you going?”

I turn on my heel, watching her stop mere inches from me. “It doesn’t concern you.”

She crosses her arms and smirks. “Don’t tell me you’re actually leaving?”

I roll my eyes and turn around.

“Wait?” I hear her shout. “You’re actually leaving?”

“Yes! Lauren!” I shake my head. I don’t know why I am bothering to say anything to her. “I’m leaving. Why do you even care?”

I hear her scoff. Why is she still following me? “I don’t care.”

“Then go away.”

“I just can’t believe you are willing to throw everything away to go fuck around with your boy toys.”

I grind my teeth to keep from screaming. I turn on my heel, my hands fisting. I’m so tempted to punch her in the face. “You must be kidding me. That’s not what’s going on here.”

Lauren scoffs and I watch her flick her hair over her shoulder, reminding me of some mean high school chick picking on one of her underlings. “Oh, really? That’s not what’s going on here?”

“I got a job. That’s where I’m going.”

Her brows furrow and she stares back at me with a mixture confusion, curiosity, and anger. “A job? What about your job here?” She gestures towards the Louvre.
