I shake my head. “I-”I groan. “I don’t even know why I’m telling you. Just leave me alone.”

“You can’t tell me you are actually dropping your internship program for some other job. You do realize this was a pain in the butt to get into.”

I cross my arms. “Of course, I know it was a pain in the butt to get into. It’s a pain in the butt to do, too.”

Lauren laughs bitterly. “You must be kidding me. It’s a pain in the butt because they only accept the best. You should know that. I can’t believe you are just going to up and leave something just because it gets a little hard for you. Life is hard, Rachel. Eventually you’re going to learn that.”

“Yeah, I know Lauren!” I shout. “Now, leave me alone!”

I turn around and run, dodging the crowd of tourists. I run all the way to the crossing, where I stop to catch my breath. When I turn around, I’m happy to see Lauren hasn’t followed me.

“Very nice,” Samuel says from behind.

I feel him come up from behind, looking over my shoulder at my camera while I snap another shot of his assistant in his office, holding a phone. The scenery of Paris’s European architecture is so beautiful and the lighting in the room is magnificent.

“I knew you were right for the job.”

I smile and snap another shot. “I think that should do it,” I say while looking at the photo. “I think this one is the best yet.”

“Great, that’s all for now Jacklyn.”

The receptionist nods while standing from the desk. I try not to stare at her white stilettos or how tight her white pencil skirt is. The woman could actually be a model. I’m shocked she chose to work at a place like this with legs as long as hers.

“I can email the photos to you, if you want,” I say while returning my camera back to my bag. I’m actually lucky I brought it with me today. I wanted to get some photos in this morning, but unfortunately I had been running late, like usual.

“That sounds perfect. And you’ll also do that Nstagram thing?”

I swallow my giggles, knowing it would be rude.Himnot understanding the whole advertising on social media is why he brought me in. I shouldn’t laugh in his face. Still, Nstagram thing?

“Yes, I will upload them tonight.”

I linger by the door, waiting for him to excuse me, but instead he leans against his desk with his arms crossed in front of his chest.

“I like you, you know,” he says sweetly.

That stomach curdling feeling is coming back. Why is he saying this so suddenly? Especially since I was just photographing for him for the past hour. God, I hope this isn’t some weird sexualharassmentthing. Maybe that’s why Lucas didn’t want me working with him.

“Thank you,” I say hesitantly, taking a step towards the door.

Samuel doesn’t move and I’m left wondering what else I should be doing for him. Should I give him a card or anything? Tell him how much he owes me for my services?

“How have you and Lucas been since you’ve arrived in Paris?”

My heart stops. Not this again. Why are we talking about Lucas when I came here to work? “I really don’t want to talk about that,” I say, my voice a little too soft. It’s like my tongue doesn’t want to work. “Is there anything else you would like for me to do? Should I leave my contact information with your receptionist?”

Samuel sighs and I watch him push away from his desk and step towards me. “I’m just worried about you getting too close to him. I’ve known that boy since he was a kid. Frankly, I know everything about him.”

He’s getting a little too close for my tastes. I’m suddenly reminded of Josh coming after me, pushing me down on the couch, grabbing my leg. I take another step back, my hand seizing the door. I’m ready to run and scream if I have to.

However, Samuel stops a foot from me. He tilts his head to the side, a bright smile on his face which doesn’t match the dark glimmer in his gaze. “I have a feeling Lucas will drop you eventually. Better sooner rather than later. I wouldn’t want you getting too attached only to wind up hurt in the end.”

I blink. My eyes prickle with unshed tears.

“I know how the boy works with women. I just don’t think you’re well matched. You have,” I watch him tap his chin while I try to remain calm. Don’t cry, I tell myself. Please, don’t cry. “Well, you’re too driven for the likes of him. Do you understand what I’m trying to tell you?”

First Christina, now him?
