“That’s great news,” says Lucas while clapping Hunter’s back.

“Yeah.” Hunter nods, but his tone lacks all excitement. His gaze swivels to me, and I flinch, wondering what exactly he’s thinking about. We haven’t quite discussed what to do about long distance and part of me worries he doesn’t want to try.

But now is not the time for worrying.

“What about you, Lucas?” Hunter asks while taking another slice of pizza. “Did you even tell your parents you’re here?”

Lucas makes a face. “No. I haven’t talked to them. I spent my Christmas with Rachel and her fam.” He nods at me with a small smile. “They were kind enough to take me in.”

“So, do they know you’re here?” Seth asks between mouthfuls.

Lucas shrugs while Alex nods vigorously.

“Oh, yes,” says Alex with a grimace. “They definitely know you’re here. My parents were talking about it over dinner the other night.”

Lucas’s brows tent and his gaze darkens. “Why? What have they been saying?”

Alex sighs. “I wouldn’t worry about it. Just your typical high society bored ladies running their mouths and making things difficult for others. My parents didn’t have much to say about it.”

“But they definitely said something,” Lucas says bitterly.

Alex shrugs. “Just that some families asked why you weren’t at the Christmas Party. There are several rumors going around. My parents don’t believe any of them.”

Lucas rolls his eyes. “Wonderful. Probably one more thing my dad will blame me for.”

“Seriously, I wouldn’t worry about it,” says Alex, reaching over and placing a hand on Lucas’s. “It’s not your problem. It’s theirs.”

“And what did you do, Alex?” Seth asks while wiping pizza sauce from his mouth. “I thought you were going to spend time with Rachel and instead you were with your parents.”

Alex leans close to Seth, making the other lean back. “I split my time. I didn’t want to inconvenience Rachel’s family.” Alex chuckles wickedly, and I watch in interest as Seth’s face flushes bright red. “Although, we certainly enjoyed our time together.”

I roll my eyes. Here Alex goes, taunting Seth again. Will these two ever give it up? “Stop—”

I stop, watching in horror as Seth takes a slice of pizza and smacks Alex with it, leaving sauce all over his cheek. Alex’s eyes widen, yet they never leave Seth’s face. Silence takes hold of the room. I glance at Lucas and Hunter, finding them both watching the pair with mouths agape.

Alex touches the side of his face, lifting the fingers between him and Seth, displaying the sauce at his tips. “You smacked me,” he breathes.

Seth nods. “Yep, indeed I did.”

“With pizza.”

Seth rolls his eyes. “Duh. You want me to do it—”

Alex swipes the sauce onto Seth’s nose, a smile growing on his face as Seth’s eyes widen. Seth’s hands fist as Alex chuckles, and I can already see the fight about to take place.

“Boys,” I start, but I’m completely ignored as Seth pounces on top of Alex.

“You fucking bastard!” Seth shouts, his hands clutching Alex’s shoulders and pushing him onto the floor.

Alex laughs as he rolls onto his back, trying in vain to push Seth off of him. “Stop!” He gasps as Seth straddles him. “Oh, my God, your face.” Alex’s voice goes shrill as he continues to laugh.

“Shut up about my face!” Seth shouts.

I scramble toward them, my hands tugging on Seth’s shoulders. “Alright, enough you two.”

I glance at Hunter and Lucas, wondering why they’re not helping, finding them both with hands over their mouths, their shoulders shaking and their faces beet red as they hold in their laughter.

“It’s not that funny,” I say, my tone exasperated. Why do I feel like I’m dating four boys still in high school?
