I shove open the door of some cafe, hearing the bell ring. The soft clang brings me back to reality and I see Rachel there, standing behind the counter, a smile gracing her lips as her gaze lands on me. She looks me up and down and within minutes she’s frowning, looking concerned.

“What’s wrong?” she asks, reaching for me like a child who’s slipped on eyes and fell on their knees.

Rather than cry, I stalk towards her, my teeth clenching against the rage brimming within me. “Nothing,” I say, my tone bitter. “I want a very large Carmel Macchiato and a chocolate scone.”

Her eyes widen, but she doesn’t question me. It’s not often I eat and drink things with sugar. I’m not a health nut exactly, but I do watch my weight and eat as healthy as possible. Today is not one of those days. I want all the sugar—anything to take away this pain and anger.

“Alright,” Rachel says after taking my money and placing the scone in front of me. Her colleague starts preparing my macchiato. The sound of steaming milk fills the cafe while I take a bite of my scone. I groan, the sweet chocolate filling taking away all the anger, leaving me feeling giddy.

“So, what’s really going on?” Rachel asks while leaning against the counter, resting her chin in her palm as she watches me lick the chocolate from my fingers.

“I think I’m going to punch Seth in the face,” I say between mouthfuls.

Rachel purses her lips. “Really? I thought things were getting… better.”

“Nope,” I say with a shake of my head. “Not at all.” Rachel’s colleague sets my macchiato in front of me and I give him a nod in thanks before snatching it and downing a very large gulp. Yep. This is heaven. I can see why I don’t get these so often. My whole body tingles with sugar. I will probably need to go on another run after this, or hit the gym. Maybe Hunter can get me in for free.

“But obviously you guys talked today, or else you wouldn’t be so upset. That’s… better, right?”

I shrug. “We were talking to Mike, because we haven’t been going to his parties lately.”

Rachel grimaces. “What did you tell him?”

“Nothing, really. He figured it out on his own. He’s pretty upset about the whole Charlie thing.” I shove the rest of my scone into my mouth while Rachel rolls her eyes, seemingly unaffected by Mike’s hurt feelings.

“Good. He should be upset. I can’t believe he wants Charlie back after everything he did. And doesn’t he have a new girlfriend?”

I shake my head while swallowing. “No, that was his cousin.”

Rachel’s eyes widen. “Really?”

“Yeah, there’s no new girl. Just Charlie.”

Rachel shakes her head and grabs a towel, wiping away invisible crumbs. “Still, what he said was terrible. Charlie is a catch. And sure, she wasn’t being very nice by hiding her away, but two wrongs don’t make a right.”

“I completely agree, however—”

Rachel’s head pops up and she groans. “What?”

“Mike wasn’t keeping their relationship a secret. He only said that, because he was hurt.”

Rachel’s head tilts back and she inhales deeply while scowling up at the ceiling. “You know what? Enough on Charlie and Mike. We were talking about you and Seth.”

“Well, this whole thing started because of Charlie and Mike. Seth thinks he’s some sort of relationship guru and told Mike to give up.”

“And that set you off?”

I scowl, my hand tightening around my macchiato. It’s a good thing it’s in a mug and not a paper cup, or else there would be caramel macchiato spilling all over the counter. “Yes. It did.”

“Why?”

“I don’t like it that he seems to think he can drop people when things get tough.” I sigh, the anger inside me boiling to a fever pitch. So much for the scone making me feel better. “And things didn’t even get hard between us. He instigated something, got weirded out, and then left me high and dry. I thought we were supposed to be friends.”

Rachel sticks out her bottom lip and flops the rag onto the counter. “I think he got a little scared, Alex. Seth isn’t really in tune with his feelings like us.”

“Well, it’s fucking annoying.”

Rachel nods. “I know. Trust me, I know.”
