Rachel pushes me away and she slips down the sink. Her body moves sluggishly. She pulls her thong up and my body twitches, recalling how warm and wet she felt just moments before. We’ve never had sex like that before. It was like we were animals, thinking only out of instinct. I already want to touch her again, but there’s no way I can get it up now. I’m too far spent and I have a passage to read.

Also, there’s something very peculiar about all this. Did she fuck me to distract me? My gaze lowers to her belly as she pulls down her dress. She’s wearing baggy clothes, but I can tell her stomach is swollen. Something is going on. I can’t quite put my finger on it. A part of me doesn’t know if I want to find out. The other part is desperate to ask her, but I hold my tongue.

“That was amazing,” Rachel breathes, pressing her swollen lips to mine before gliding past me. “We should get back before the others wonder where we are. We can’t have you missing your big reading,” she adds with a wink.

“Yeah,” I whisper, trying to smile. It comes out as a grimace, but I don’t think Rachel notices.

She throws open the door and waltzes out with her head held high. I’m surprised no-one is staring at us given how loud we were. I suppose it’s a bit loud in the bar with all this chatter.

Rachel pauses and I nearly crash into her. I follow her gaze, landing on Charlie, sitting by herself, nursing her drink while Mike chatters on with Steve at the bar. Well, she looks even worse off than before.

“I’m gonna sit speak with Charlie real quick,” Rachel says without turning around.

“I’ll be with Hunter and Alex if you need anything.”

Rachel nods and immediately my gaze is searching for the bros, knowing I need to tell them about what just happened—about how Rachel is hiding something. I find Hunter looking at the pyramid of books and trudge toward him, careful not to bump into anyone.

“Hey,” Hunter says without looking at me. “You’ve been gone awhile.”

“Yeah, Rachel and I had a quickie in the bathroom.”

Hunter jerks toward me, a dark frown marring his usual sunny complexion. “Why wasn’t I invited?”

“Never mind that. Something is definitely up with Rachel.”

Hunter purses his lips and I can tell his jealousy is getting to him. There’s no time for that. I need to get this out before I get drunk and forget. “She wanted to distract me, Hunter. I was asking her about what’s going on. I’m worried she’s keeping a secret.”

The darkness in Hunter’s gaze dissipates, and a slow smile creeps across his face. “Soooo I was right?”

Ugh. Hunter. That’s what you’re concerned about now? “Yes, fine, you were right to be worried. There. Are you happy?”

Hunter gives me a smug look as he crosses his arms. “Very.”

“So, what should we do?”

“I have no—”

“Hey, guys,” Alex calls while sidling close to me, a beer in his hand. “What are we discussing so secretly about?”

“Rachel,” Hunter and I say at the same time.

I notice the way Alex stiffens and how his grasp tightens around his beer. “R-Rachel?” He says shakily. “Why are we talking about her?”

My eyes narrow on him. Why is he acting so weird?

“Have you noticed anything different about her?” Hunter asks.

Alex looks upward, his fingers stroking his chin, looking thoughtful. “No, I don’t think so,” he says, his voice slightly high-pitched. “I haven’t noticed anything strange about her.”

I share a look with Hunter. He’s not buying it either. Alex knows something. He keeps swirling his beer around in his glass and avoiding our stares. His feet keep shifting back and forth, as well. What did Rachel tell him?

“You know something, don’t you, Alex,” I say slowly, leaning into him, my shoulder brushing against his.

Alex shakes his head, suddenly very interested in his drink. “Nope. I know nothing.”

Hunter scoffs. “That’s exactly what you would say if you did know something.”

Alex clears his throat and shakes his head again, looking very uncomfortable as Hunter and I encroach upon his space. “Well, I don’t.”
