His gaze turned grim, and for a moment, it seemed as if he were on the brink of shedding some sort of a tear.

“Look,” he said softly, keeping his eyes locked onto mine. “I’m sorry. Just… give me another shot. Please?”

Oh, shit. Now he was begging.

Pleading.

The line moved up again, and I took another couple of steps forward. After a moment of staring at the desk, pretending to find it incredibly fascinating compared to Elliot’s face, I turned back to him.

“Okay,” I said. “What type of party is this, exactly?”

The smile that gushed across his face was big enough to melt the heart of any Disney princess.

“It’s more of a small gathering,” he said. “Live music. Snacks. Drinks. Good people. I swear, it’ll be nothing like that other party I dragged you to. What do you say?”

I raised an eyebrow at him, forcing some suspense before giving him a shrug. “Why the hell not?”

Who knew? Maybe it’d relieve my shit-ton of stress.

“Great.” He nodded, looking past my shoulders. “Looks like you’re up.”

“Finally,” I breathed, turning around to step up to the desk. I put my student ID onto the surface. “Kathleen Silver. I’m expecting just one package.”

“We got you right here,” the girl said, hefting a large cardboard box onto the desk and sliding it over to me.

Before I could take it, Elliot stepped around me and up to the desk. I half-expected him to try to flirt with the girl working the mailroom, and I felt my blood pressure rise as he put his hands on my package.

“Are you expecting a package?” the girl asked.

Instead of replying, Elliot pulled my package toward himself, and lifted it into his arms. He turned to me, and said, “Nope. Just here to provide some service to this lovely lady right here.”

With that, he tucked the package under his right arm, and began walking away from the mailroom. I watched him, my feet frozen into place as if my mind hadn’t registered the fact that I was done with my little errand.

“You justgonnastand there with your mouth open, Silver, or are yougonnathank me?” he called, grinning over his shoulder. “Come on. I’ll carry it up for you.”

I shook my head down at the ground, a weak attempt to hide the smile slinking across my face. “Thank you. What a gentleman.”

Did he really just see me standing in line and decide to join for the sole sake of carrying my shit? If that didn’t make me a motherfucking Cinderella, I didn’t know what did.

“So,” I said, as we waited for the elevator. “Are you going to tell me where this party is, exactly? And, like, who’s going?”

“Nope.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. Elliot just threw his head back at laughed.

“I’m kidding. I would never withhold such pertinent information from Kathleen Silver. To answer the second part of the question, it’ll just be me, myself, and I. Oh, and you, too.”

I rolled my eyes. “So, you’re asking me out? My bad—forcingme out?”

“That would be an accurate statement.”

The elevator doors glided open, and a mob of boys spilled out, obviously already too drunk for whatever haunt they were about to infiltrate. We took their place, and I waited for the doors to close behind us before asking him anything more.

“And where will thisdatebe taking place?” I said, emphasizing the worddateas if to test him, to see if he’d flinch or possibly even throw up. After everything that had happened to me over the past few days, that was exactly whatIwanted to do. “Some park? A Gymnastics studio?”

He chuckled. “God, you’re hilarious. No, and no. It’s a secret. Can you keep secrets?”

“Maybe,” I said. “Tell me and we’ll find out.”
