"I never expected it to be you," he says as he sits down.

"Why would you?" she sneers. "You never think about anything but yourself."

He looks away for a second, trying to keep his anger in control. "Why are you here, Mercedez?"

"It's Tyeler," she corrects. "I dropped the name Mercedez a long time ago."

"That's a shame. I always loved that name."

The corner of her mouth raises. "That's exactly why I did it."

He rolls his eyes. "Is that what you came here for? To rub insults in my face?"

"Please. My time is more important than that." She leans on the table, looking every bit like the sexy psychopath I fell for. "I'm just here so you know I won. You started the war, but I'm the one that came out on top. I won when they sent you to this hellhole. I won when they refused to let you out early. I won when you couldn't manage to break me. And I'm going to keep winning."

Laughing like he genuinely thinks it's comical, he finally looks back at her. "You think that, huh?"

"Oh, I know it," she snaps back. "Because I will be there at every single parole board hearing, making sure you spend every single second of that twenty-five years behind bars. You will never be able to do to another girl what you did to me. I'll make sure of it."

The devious smile he gets makes me want to punch him right in the face. "You're a spitfire. You get that from me."

"No. I get that from me. You don't get to take credit for anything that has to do with me and who I am." She stands up and smiles. "Enjoy your cell."

I start to follow her out, but just before we reach the door, I stop. "Give me a second and I'll be right out."

She looks unsure but nods anyway. As soon as she's gone, I turn around and walk back to the table. He snorts when he sees me.

"You've got your hands full with that one."

I shake my head. "Don't talk about her that way. Actually, don't talk about her at all."

He snorts. "And why should I listen to you?"

"Because I'm the one you should fear." I lean closer and keep my voice low. "When you do get out of prison, you're going to vanish. I don't give a shit where you go or who you go with, but you're going to get the fuck out of here and never contact Tyeler again."

"Oh yeah? And if I don't?"

I chuckle. "You know, between you and me, I wish you were granted parole yesterday. You're a hell of a lot safer behind bars. I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty. And you better bet the son of the district attorney knows how to cover his tracks well enough.”

He stares back at me, trying to look amused to hide his fear. "Are you threatening me, son?"

"You're damn fucking right I am."
