Epilogue

The sun shinesthrough the window and lands on my face, waking me up. I roll over to pull Tye in closer, but all I find is cold sheets and a piece of paper. I groan softly as I stretch and my eyes blink open for me to read the note

Carter,

Had to meet Kennedy to work on a project.

Be back later.

I love you.

The corners of my mouth raise as I see those three little words. No matter how many times she says them, I don't think I'll ever tire of hearing it. The wild one with pink hair burrowed her way into my heart and took up residence a long time ago.

I slip out of bed and make my way to Jace's room. The conversation Tye and I had last night is still in the forefront of my mind. It took a while for me to convince her that it wasn't just sleepy ramblings, but after I did, she agreed. Now there's just one thing left to do.

My best friend is still sleeping, but thankfully, he's alone. I run full force and leap, jumping onto his bed and landing directly on top of him. He wakes immediately and moans in pain, clutching his stomach.

"Carter, I swear to God," he threatens, but it's empty.

I give him a goofy smile. "What's wrong? I want to cuddle."

In all the time I've known him, I don't think I've ever seen Jace jump out of bed so fast in my life. I laugh as he stumbles over the sheets. Once he finds his footing, he shakes his head.

"I need a whole ass pot of coffee to deal with you," he says.

The two of us head into the main area and he starts messing with the coffee maker. I rack my brain with how I'm going to tell him this. After all, we've spent the past two and a half years living together, and to say we've been to hell and back would be an understatement of epic proportions. If I could just bring him with me, I would, but I don't think Tye would approve.

"Why do you look constipated?" Jace asks.

I snap out of it and find him leaning against the counter, watching me curiously. "Fuck off. I am not. I'm just thinking."

He chuckles. "Don't hurt yourself."

"I don't know why I deal with you," I joke. "The emotional abuse I deal with, I swear."

"I'll let Dr. Litman know you're looking for a therapist," he claps back.

The fact that Jace still sees the therapist he was forced to start going to over a year ago is just one of many things that makes me proud of him. With him being on the roof the night Davi jumped, that trauma just doesn't go away. The nightmares he used to have are few and far between now, but they do still happen. Only now, he knows how to deal with them safely instead of diving into the closest bottle of pills.

"Seriously," he says. "Why do you look like you're trying to solve the world's biggest mystery? Has Tye been making you watch crime tv again?"

"You're intolerable."

He smiles. "I can make you a cup of warm milk."

I roll my eyes playfully. "I get wrapped up in trying to solve one case and I get ragged on forever."

"Three days, Carter. You did nothing but research that case for three days."

"It was a fucked-up case!" I argue. "And besides, Tye won't let me watch that stuff anymore."

He throws his head back, laughing. "Smart girl."

I lean against the island while Jace pours his cup of coffee. My palms are sweaty, and I take a deep breath. It's now or never.

"So, uh," I start, "I think Tye and I might get our own place."
