He puts the cigarette between his lips and shrugs. "I call it like I see it."

"So what the hell do I do?"

"You're asking me?" I nod. "What about Jace?"

Zayn and I are good friends, but he seems to understand that what Jace and I have is just at another level. Mainly since he has the same kind of thing with Knox. Because of that, he's always careful never to intrude or do anything that might be looked at as overstepping. When Jace was in his vulnerable points, he accused me of replacing him with Zayn a couple of times.

"He thinks I should keep my distance," I explain.

Z snorts. "Does he know you at all? Telling you to do that is like all but pushing you toward her."

I laugh because he's right, but still. "Jace has a point. Tye isn't like anyone you've ever met before. She's stronger than most and allergic to feelings. Other than when Davi died, I've rarely seen that girl show any emotion, and because of that, she has the ability to be ruthless."

"Sounds like the kind of girl you need," he quips.

"The fuck is that supposed to mean?" I clap back playfully.

He exhales a puff of smoke and smiles. "Dude, I've watched you take more chicks home than Knox used to. And not once have you ever seen any of them a second time. You want to talk allergic to feelings, you might want to look in the mirror."

"Okay, touché," I agree. "I've just had no luck when it comes to wanting a relationship with someone. So the way I see it, why bother trying?"

"And she gives you a reason to try?"

Looking down at my lap, thoughts of Tye force a smile to my face. "She alone is a reason to fight like hell for it."

LEAVING ZAYN'S, JACE ANDI drop Paige off at her Mom's house. Tomorrow would have been her dad's birthday, so she's skipping school and choosing to spend the whole day with her mom instead. As soon as she's out of the car, Jace turns to look at me. It's one of those moments where neither of us really needs to say anything—we just understand.

"You're thinking it, too," he murmurs.

I nod slowly. Finding out today that Tye got a job at Hypnotic with Amelia and Kennedy was a definite shock. For the entire time we knew her, she was just as loaded as Davianna was. Always going to the best clubs. Wearing designer clothing. She looked like she wanted for nothing. But if that was true, why is she getting a job as a bartender now?

As I pull up to the red light, I take out my phone and hit a few buttons. The sound of ringing plays through the car speakers until Wyatt, a good friend from high school, answers.

"Hey, Trayland," he greets me.

"Hey. Can you do me a favor?"

"That depends. Is it an illegal favor?"

I chuckle. "Would that really make a difference?"

He snorts, and I hear him take a seat at his desk. "Of course. The illegal favors are much more fun."

"I'll keep that in mind," I tell him. "For now, I need you to find me everything you can on Mercedez Tyeler Morgan. She usually goes by Tyeler. I want bank records, transcripts, criminal history. Anything you can find, I want it."

Wyatt is one of the most underestimated gems from my high school. Everyone always looked at him like a jock, but he's actually one of the smartest guys I know. The shit he can do with a computer could put even the most skilled hacker to shame. It was actually him who helped me find the video feed that exonerated Jace. He's pure magic with a keyboard.

"You've got it, boss."

I thank him and hop off the phone, feeling Jace's eyes on me as soon as I do.

"You're getting worried."

Shaking my head, I grip the steering wheel a little tighter. "I just want to know what she's up to. It never hurts to have all the information."

He hums, clearly not buying it, but also not calling me out on it either.

I'll take it.
