"Yeah. Can you tell them I'll deal with it tomorrow?"

Repeating my words, Jace comes back to the line. "They said they just need to talk to you personally before they can leave."

Fuck. "Okay. Send them up."

I hang up the phone and slam it down on the counter before dragging Tye toward Jace's room. No one will be able to see her if she's standing over there. I put my hands on her shoulders and bend down to look her straight in the eyes.

"The cops are coming to talk to me," I tell her. "If they see you, they're going to take you into custody and book you on so many charges your head will spin. You need to stay right here where they can't see you."

Her brows furrow, and the movement of her forehead pulls on the butterfly stitches. "What's my other option?"

"You don't have one. It's here or jail."

"Jail it is," she says and heads for the door.

I grab her by the shoulders and put her back where I had her originally. "I swear to God, Tyeler. I still have the handcuffs you tied me up with. Do not make me use them."

A hard knock on the door tells me they're here, and with one more look at Tye, she thankfully gives in with an eye roll. I step away from her and go to the door. As soon as I open it, I'm faced with two officers. And, as if luck is somewhat on my side tonight, I know one of them.

"Hey Taylor," I greet him. "What's up?"

He looks at me strangely, probably in disbelief I'm so calm. "Carter, have you seen the condition of your car?"

I run my fingers through my hair. "Yeah, I saw it. Fucking bullshit."

"Did you happen to see who was driving the other car?" the other officer asks.

Shaking my head, I make sure to block the doorway with my body, just in case Tye decides to make some dumbass move. "No, and honestly, at this point, the damage is done. If you don't mind, I'd rather you just tow the car wherever you see fit and I'll come down to the station to deal with it tomorrow."

"I'm sorry, son. We can't—"

Taylor puts a hand on his fellow officer's chest to stop him. "That's fine. Tell your dad I said hello."

"I will. Thanks, Taylor."

They start to walk away and I close the door, resting my back against it and exhaling slowly. When I reopen my eyes, Tye is leaning against Jace's doorway and picking at her nails. It's as if she sees nothing wrong with what she did tonight.

"How are you just numb right now?" I murmur and she looks up at me. "How are you completely unfazed by everything?"

Her gaze stays locked with mine, but there's nothing there. No remorse. No guilt. She's just broken inside, and while that scares the shit out of me, Knox had a point. The thing she needs most right now is for someone to take control, because she clearly has none.

After a few moments of total silence, she clears her throat. "Well, they're gone now, so I'm going to go."

She makes it to the door this time, but just as she opens it, I put my hand on it and push it shut.

"What part of you're not going anywhere do you not understand?"

Every part of her is just bound to fight me at every turn. "Oh, so now you're just going to hold me hostage in here?"

"If it means keeping you safe, then yes!" I roar. "I've let you play your games and get the revenge you think I deserve, but I draw the fucking line at putting yourself in danger! Enough is enough."

Her chest heaves as she starts to get angry. Good. At least it's better than no emotion at all. I need her to feel something. I need her to fight.

"You don't get to tell me when it's enough!" she sneers.

"Too damn bad!" I move closer, getting in her face. "Do you really think this is what Davi wanted? You risking your own fucking life just to ruin mine?"

"Fuck you." She pushes me backward. "Don't you dare tell me what she would have wanted. She would've wanted to be here!"
