“You did what?” she roars. “Are you out of your mind? Why would you do that?”

“Because he’s the district attorney and I thought he could help,” I argue. “But he can’t. He has no jurisdiction there and he doesn’t have enough contacts in Miami to have any kind of pull.”

She rolls her eyes. “No shit. So, can we leave?”

I shake my head. “He said that there’s still a chance we can keep him from getting paroled, but it’s going to take something you’re not going to like.”

Fear and anxiety tighten her mouth into a flat line, and she swallows hard. “What?”

“You’re going to need to make a victim’s statement at the hearing.”

Before the words are even fully out of my mouth, she’s shaking her head and turning away. “No. Absolutely not. It’s not going to happen.”

“Tye,” I say softly, reaching over to grab her hand. “Benz, please.”

She turns back to me, and there are tears building in her eyes. “I can’t face him, Carter. I can’t.”

“I know,” I whisper. “But you’re not a little girl anymore, and you’re certainly not alone. You know as well as I do that he deserves to rot in there. Let’s make sure he has to spend every last bit of that twenty-five years in a cell.”

Her chest rises and falls steadily with every breath as she tries to keep herself calm. It’s obvious the idea of having to see her dad again, to be in the same room as him, triggers her in ways I can’t even begin to imagine. But this is Tye, and there isn’t a doubt in my mind that she’s strong enough to take him on.

“He can’t hurt you anymore,” I tell her. “He won’t come anywhere near you. I’d die before I let that happen.”

She exhales slowly. “You’ll go with me?”

“Try and stop me.”

A small giggle leaves her mouth as she nods. “Okay. I’ll do it. I’ll make a statement.”

Reaching over, I grab her face and pull her in, kissing her slowly. There isn’t a day that passes that I don’t admire the hell out of this girl. After everything she’s been through, she’s still standing.

She’s still strong.

She’s still her.

I open my door and nod for her to get out. “Come on. My dad is going to help teach you some of the things you need to say to have the most impact.”

“Ugh.” She climbs out of the car and meets me at the hood. “This is not how I imagined meeting your parents.”

I lace my fingers with hers and smirk. “So, you’ve imagined meeting them?”

“You’re insufferable.”

OUR SEATS AT THEconcert are absolutely perfect: Dead center. Front row. Though we're all standing in front of them instead of actually sitting. I've got Jace to my left and Tyeler to my right, with Zayn, Easton, and the girls beside her. Harland Storm, the lead singer, and I know each other from when my dad got Sound the Sirens to play at my seventeenth birthday party. They were on the rise back then but weren't nearly as big as they are now.

Harland walks back and forth across the stage, screaming the lyrics and making for a fantastic show. Being as I have the album on my playlist, I know every last word.

"All right, this next song is a little more X-rated," he announces. "So if you've got little ones...well, I'm sorry in advance, but you brought them here, so I'm kind of not."

He puts the microphone in the stand and places his fingers on the strings of the guitar.

"This is ‘Tempt Me Like A Sin.’”

Out of every song they have, I think this one is my favorite— pulsing beat in the song, paired with the lyrics, is pure sex. One day I'm going to fuck Tye to it.

Now that I think about it…

With a hand on her waist, I carefully move her so she's standing in front of me. I wrap my arms around her and dip my pinky underneath her waist band but being careful enough to hide it with my other hand.
