I sit down on the couch and turn the television to Holden’s game. It’s the end of the first period, and the Bruins are winning 1-0. I wish I had been able to see it from the beginning, but I guess this will have to do. Grabbing the closest blanket to me, which also happens to be my favorite, I snuggle into it and try to imagine I’m there. The thought of being in the same place as my husband soothes me. It’s been three weeks since I’ve gotten to be near him and I’m losing my ever-loving mind.

Our wedding was a little over two months ago and I still have a hard time believing Holden Rivers is my husband. Every now and then, I need to look at our marriage certificate or pictures from that day and pinch myself. It just feels too good to be true.

While watching the game, the camera pans over the audience. For the first time in months, I don’t even bother looking for Bianca. After Hawaii, Holden agreed not to press charges on her for defamation but insisted we get restraining orders. I didn’t fight him on it. To be honest, the thought of her not coming anywhere near us is relieving. Besides, if she tries to pull something else with the media, Holden can use the restraining order to show she’s nothing but a psycho ex.

The game ends 2-1 with the Bruins taking the win. I take out my phone and send a quick text to my superstar.

Me: Congrats on the win, babe.

We’ll celebrate when you come home.

A half hour passes and my phone starts to vibrate in my lap. I smile as I see a picture from our wedding pop up on the screen.

“Hi baby.” I answer.

“God, I missed your voice.” He breathes. “How was the shower today?”

“It was nice. We got a lot of things for the baby.”

“Hold on.” He says, requesting to turn the call into video.

I accept it and my chest fills with butterflies as he comes on the screen. He’s still in the locker room, not even fully dressed yet.

“What did you do, call me as soon as you got your phone?”

“Yes.” A bunch of his teammates answer, causing Holden to pout.

“What?” He whines. “I missed you.”

That’s one thing I love about him. Despite the bad boy attitude that he had when I first met him, sheltered off from the world, he’s really stopped doing that. He has no issue displaying how he feels about me for anyone to see. It’s adorable.

I show him all the items that have taken over the nursery. Completely lacking energy, I’ve decided to wait until he gets home to set them up. Besides, he wants to do everything he can to help me.

“Ow.” I hiss as a pain shoots up the front of my stomach.

“Are you okay? What’s wrong?” He’s instantly on full alert.

Attempting to maintain my composure, I nod. “I’m fine.”

“You don’t look fine. What happened? Do you want me to come home?”

Every part of me wants to say yes, but I force myself not to. “No, really. I’m okay. She was just probably on something she shouldn’t have been.”

He doesn’t look convinced but thankfully doesn’t say anything. The two of us get off the phone so he can finish changing and get back to his hotel. I try to hide the still present pain as I say I love you and wait for him to end the call. Once he does, I put my phone down on the bed and go to get a drink of water.

I grab a glass from the cabinet and pad over to the fridge, first getting ice and then letting it fill with water. As I walk around the island, an excruciating pain rips through my belly. The glass falls from my hand and shatters onto the ground. Just when I’m about to catch my breath, another stab comes and has me crumbling to the floor, cutting my hand on the piercing shards.

I know labor can be rough, but this is something completely different. I’m only 33 weeks. Panic consumes me as the agony keeps coming. Something is wrong.

Chapter 29

Ilie hunched over on the floor, gripping my stomach and screaming in absolute anguish. The pain will not let up. Searching for my phone, I realize I left it on my bed. My hand is gushing blood with a piece of glass still sticking out of it. The only thing I can think to do, is try to hold myself together and wait for it to pass.

A few seconds later, Caleb barges through the door in a panic. He looks around the room before finally spotting me. His eyes widen and he rushes over quickly.

“Careful. There’s glass everywhere.”

He ignores me, dropping onto his knees and looking me over.
