“Yes, but how many of them are married? None. Even Travis has not married the girl I introduced him to.”

That was weird. How did a ghost introduce two people?Oh, hi, I’m your dead grandmother and I’d like to introduce the two of you. If that didn’t send a girl running from a man, she didn’t know what would.

“Sounds like a problem,” Emily said. But it wasn’t her problem.

The ghost gave a smile. “I knew you would understand. I like the way you stand up to Tanner. That’s what that boy needs. A strong woman who will not take crap from him, as you young people like to say.”

Oh no, she was not going to try to set her up with Tanner. That was not going to happen.

“Why are you talking to me about Tanner? I’m sure you’ve heard that we’re not exactly friends.”

The ghost gave a little laugh. “But you could be.”

Oh no, she didn’t know what this ghost was up to, but for one, she didn’t really believe in paranormal sightings, and two, she would never let a ghost hook her up with Tanner.

“I’m a widow. A recent widow like three years ago. My husband was in the military; he had PTSD and I’m not going to accept another man with that issue. Been there, done that, and got the damn visit from the military sayingwe regret to inform you…”

The memory of those two officers showing up at her doorstep was like a slap to the head. Especially with the news they delivered.

The ghost seemed to try to touch her and Emily backed against the headboard.

“Oh, sweetie, I was a widow twice and it’s the worst. I’m so sorry about your husband. It’s just my boy needs some love and understanding, and I think you’re the perfect person to help him.”

Oh, if this ghost only knew what had gone on between the two of them. She would be long gone. A spontaneous meeting in a hotel was not exactly the kind of action a grandmother would approve of for her grandson.

“No, not going to happen. Tanner wants me fired. He’d gladly walk me out of here tomorrow if he could.”

“That’s because he’s afraid of the feelings he has for you,” the woman said.

Emily was insane. She was lying in bed, talking to a ghost who wanted her to help Tanner. What was wrong with her? And the dead woman was saying that Tanner had feelings for Emily.

Bad feelings.

“The only feelings he has for me is he’s sorry, he—” The words just seemed to slip from her mouth. She wasn’t about to tell this older woman, a ghost, that she’d slept with her grandson. Of course, that might send the specter running or it might bring trouble. And tonight, she just wanted to rest.

“Look, you need to go. It’s been a long hectic day, and tomorrow, I have to serve breakfast at seven a.m. which means I have to start cooking at six. I need my beauty rest.”

The ghost gave a little laugh. “You definitely are a blunt person. Exactly what Tanner needs.”

“No,” Emily said again. “Don’t be thinking of ways to get us together. I’m avoiding him and he hates me. There is no way we’ll ever get together. I’d suggest looking for another woman or starting on another of the Burnetts. As for me, I’m rolling over and going to sleep. If you want to stay, you can, but I’m going to sleep.”

The idea of someone watching her sleep was creepy, but she hoped the unwelcomed visitor would get the hint and leave.

The ghost dissipated and disappeared. “I’m not giving up on you two.”

“You must like to be frustrated,” Emily said as she rolled over and closed her eyes.

Good grief, was she really talking to a ghost? What the hell was wrong with her? Had anyone else in this family experienced this? She mentioned that Travis had not married the woman she found for him.

“Good night, dear,” the ghost said.

With a groan, Emily put the pillow over her head. She had to sleep and this was not helping.
