CHAPTER10

The next morning, Emily could not get the ghost visit out of her head. Had it been real or had she just gone into some kind of haze from being so tired and stressed? She didn’t know, but she thought there might be one person who could tell her.

Desiree. The woman was her go-to for any questions she had about the ranch. After all, she was a Burnett and she knew so much about the family, the ranch, and everything going on here.

This morning’s breakfast serving had been a huge hit with the guests and she had lunch already prepared. It would be a salad bar with their choice of taco meat or sliced turkey.

The salad bar was set up and she just had to put the vegetables out. The taco mixture was simmering and the lunch meat was chilling in the fridge.

Desiree entered the building and Emily waved at her.

“When you get a minute, I need to speak to you,” she called.

The girl smiled, and Emily went back to fixing the strawberry cake she was preparing for tonight.

A few minutes later, she came into the kitchen.

“Oh, that looks delicious. I’m tempted to steal a piece right now.”

“Don’t you dare,” Emily said with a laugh. “It’s for tonight.”

“I’ll definitely be here. What’s wrong?”

How did she tell her what had happened last night without sounding like a total nut job?

She poured the cake batter into the pan and slid it into the oven.

“After I got back to my cabin last night, when I crawled into bed, the strangest thing happened.”

Desiree put her hand to her forehead and shook her head. Why did Emily get the feeling that she knew what she was going to say?

“A ghost appeared before me. She said her name was Eugenia Burnett. I don’t believe in ghosts, and yet, she spoke to me.”

A sigh escaped from Desiree. “That’s my great-great-great-great-grandmother. She’s come back and has been trying to matchmake us. She’s worried the family line is going to die out.”

“So I’m not crazy?”

“No,” Desiree said with a laugh. “But I’m warning you, when you receive a visit from Eugenia, that means she has someone in mind for you, and she’ll go to any lengths to put the two of you together.”

Just what Emily did not need: a matchmaking ghost.

“I’m not interested and I told her that,” she said.

“Doesn’t matter. Who is she trying to match you with?”

“Tanner, and we all know how well that’s going,” Emily said.

Desiree busted out laughing. “The man doth protest too much.”

“I’m just here to cook. Nothing else. Why he’s so worried I’m going to jump his bones, I don’t know, but he has nothing to worry about. And Eugenia is going to be very disappointed. It’s not going to happen.”

Just then, a group of guests came through the door. “Gotta run, it’s arts and crafts time. We’ll talk more later. But I’m warning you, she’s a stubborn old woman who normally gets her way.”

“Well, she hasn’t had to deal with me.”

Desiree laughed as she went out the door.

Maybe Emily should make a door hanger for Tanner. She could needlepoint the wordsStay out. Go away. Not interested.
