I felt for him. I never thought for one moment he would ever feel hurt or anguish or ever topple over the edge of the precipice he had staggered to. But here he was, telling me how he felt. He had feelings, like anyone else did. And hearing those feelings made me see the man in front of me, the man of my dreams, though once he was the monster that haunted me.

“You’re right. I was going to bind with you before your ceremony. I was going to break the spell and make you pregnant before you bound with anyone else. But I knew you were already pregnant and I couldn’t hurt your child. It ruined everything. It was the only way I could stop Seb and Kane, and I lost focus on that because of Carter and Ryan.”

“You tried to kill Carter because you thought he was Aria’s father.” I laughed, turning my head slightly away from him. “Clay wanted you to believe Carter was the one I was going to perform the ritual with. Clay sacrificed Carter. That is why I begged you not to kill him.”

“Yes, I believed, not only was he the father, but you were breaking the spell with him,” he said.

I stood silent for a moment. “You could have killed my baby if you wanted to,” I whispered. “I’d never have known.”

“I’d never kill part of you,” he said.

I swallowed hard at that because here I was thinking of taking his life. “I’m going home Blake,” I said. “I’ll leave you with a decision on how we work this out.”

“And the baby?” he said, but I knew it was a question. “He’ll be part dark.”

“I’ll get the spells lifted on the house. It will be fine,” I said. I swallowed as I looked at him, realising what he had said. “You know it’s a boy.”

He nodded, and I flashed my hand over my stomach.

“Seb is going to be pissed at that,” I said.

Blake laughed. “You made him a promise.”

I nodded. “It seems since Aria came on the scene, everyone wants a baby.”

“Everyone wants one with you,” he said. “We’re all jealous of what Kane has.”

I glanced around at the forest and beyond, wondering how the fuck I got back from this. I should be thankful really because as much as we sifted into this place, it wasn’t like he took me to the Lowerworld.

That would have been all my nightmares, rolled up into a ball and thrown back at me. No, we were definitely somewhere close by.

“I take it the parents’ part was always a lie,” I said, nodding towards his house.

“My parents live in Spain. They prefer heat,” he said. “The house is mine.”

“That makes sense, considering who they are,” I said.

He curved one side of his lip.

“And the doctor's training. Are you quitting now?” I asked.

He nodded. “I want to raise my children.”

Children.

“Oh,” I whispered. “How many do you have?”

“In three and a half months, I’m going to have one,” he said.

I swallowed and glanced away for a moment. He said it was only me, yet he’d got someone else pregnant. “You’re going to have a baby,” I whispered as jealousy and anger spiked through me like I never realised it ever could. I put my hands behind my back and pushed my thumb and middle fingers together, gave Ryan a small thanks and asked the gods to make me invisible.

“This baby is my first. You do not appreciate how long I’ve waited. I couldn’t wait any longer,” he said.

Of course, he knew what I was about to do and his palm raised to stop me, but it was too late.

“Goodbye Blake,” I said. My voice was harder than I thought it would ever sound to him.

His eyes opened wide as he stared at where I stood invisible.
