“And I accept you’re mine,” I said. I watched as his head tilted to one side as he considered me. “But so are Seb and Kane.”

“Lacey.” His voice was demanding. Luckily, he couldn’t move, but he knew what was about to happen.

Chapter 39

Lacey

Idepartedhishometo the largest roar, and I ran as fast as I could. I let out a huff and leapt over the undergrowth of soft layers of leaves.

Small animals rushed through bushes in utter panic at the sounds of my feet. It was as though everything echoed in the woods around his home. But every way I turned, I felt him on my heels, but I knew it wasn’t possible.

That was until I halted at the sound of a whoosh. I turned around in a quick circle.

The growl of a beast from behind made me spin again, and I stopped open-mouthed as his wings flapped hard just in the clearing. I knew he was about to pounce on me.

I held out my hands, letting him know I’d use my magic on him again. “It can work,” I said. “I’m not saying no to you. I’m saying we can make this work.”

He laughed hard, but it wouldn’t stop me.

“I want each of you. You shared me with Seb that night. You were happy Ryan was watching. Why would it be so bad? It would be you, Kane and Seb, and me. I want it, why can’t you? Together. Separate. Kane’s not really a sharer either, but we can make it work.”

“We are gods Lacey, Kane and Seb are angels.”

“I don’t care what they are. I love them and I don’t want to fight you, Blake, but I can’t leave my daughter and I can’t leave Seb and Kane, either. And for that reason, I will fight this bond we have.”

“You’re pregnant,” he said.

I shook my head. “I’m not.”

“You’re carrying my child,” he said, nodding to my stomach.

“It’s not possible.” I shook my head again, but my hand slapped over my lower tummy. I narrowed my eyes at him. “You got me pregnant? Only I can...”

Conflicting ideas and emotions ran through me as the war of my own thoughts battle with each other.

Though anger was the actual emotion that was burning up inside me right now. How had he done it, made me pregnant and already knew? He’d planned this all along, and put me off the scent by making me doubt Ryan instead of him.

“When you came to ask about binding.” He stepped forward and placed his hands across my stomach. I stood motionless, unable to move. Sheer shock was pulsing through me. “It’s true, the baby is already growing inside you.”

He grinned, and I shook my head as bile rose high in my throat, and I bit down on my lower lip as I thought of my options.

I needed to be untraceable, invisible, no evidence of my existence.

I stepped backward. I needed to get away from him.

“I always knew you were pregnant with Aria. I knew before you did,” he said. “Remember when you asked why I sniffed you at your ceremony? I was so angry, though I hid it very well. Though I got the father wrong.”

“You thought it was Carter? Losing your touch?” I asked, and smiled.

“I let my anger cloud my judgement. I knew you were pregnant and then you were going to have the joining ritual that toppled me over the edge.”

I closed my eyes briefly, not enough time for him to take me off my guard. Not enough time for him to capture me.

“But I think you’re lying,” I said. “You knew I was pregnant before then, when I was on the motorbike. You saved her life before I even knew I was pregnant. My pregnancy didn’t annoy you on the day of the ceremony. Something else did.”

He ran his tongue under his upper lip, and I hesitated just for a moment. I needed a little time, time to take in what he was saying.

The look in his eyes told me I was right. He was the dark king, the personification of evil, but he saved my child’s life. The presence he gave wasn’t of evil, quite the opposite.
