I wanted to stop her.

I couldn’t.

She slammed the car door and but I sat in the driver’s seat in silence as I drove to the edge of the oak perimeter. I saw her through the side mirror, her eyes laced with tears. She refused to let me see, pretending she was watching the scene outside.

“Stop the car here. I’ll walk the rest of the way while I make sure Clay has reduced the wards.” She ran a gentle hand over her stomach.

“No,” I shouted. “I’ll drive in. I’ll be fine.”

“I need the walk,” she yelled. “Stop the car or I’ll stop it.”

I slammed my foot against the brake, and the car stopped.

Lacey plucked up her bag and dashed out of the car, not turning to look at me as she bounded ahead. But I didn’t leave. I followed at a snail’s pace as she strode along the pavement.

"Go home," she turned and yelled.

She marched down the pavement. I turned to where I had caught her glimpsing to the side and into the woods. Nothing.

But she kept looking, and I drove a little further and looked through a clearing to see what had spiked her curiosity.

A white wolf.

The wolf seemed to stop and watch Lacey as she walked, but she was the only person out and anybody else would think it was probably hungry. It bound toward her at a speed that was lightning fast. His claws were out.

I could fight a wolf. I could easily kill it right now. But he was here for a reason. A reason I needed to work out.

I reversed the car back to her and shouted, “get in now there’s a wolf.”

“Oh fuck,” she said, jumping in the car and slamming the door behind her. I waited as the wolf got closer, then drove off, looking into my rear-view mirror as the wolf skulked back toward the woods.

Chapter 45

Lacey

Lessthanaweeklater, I was fully recovered and back at the university, thoughts of Blake were heavy on my mind and I needed to clear my head for an hour.

First, I tried to go for a walk away in the nearby town, anywhere from the campus, but the streets were full because the town was getting ready for a fair at the weekend. I knew it wouldn’t help me clear my mind.

I made a rash decision, thinking it was a better idea to go to the village next door. Crossing my fingers, it would be less hectic, and I strolled to my car and drove the fifteen minute journey to the nearby village.

I drove slowly into the village, trying to locate a car parking space, and smiled when I saw one, reversing the car into the perfect spot just outside the local delicatessen.Brilliant.A handy place for me to grab a sandwich before I returned to the university later.

For now, I needed a coffee and after picking up my drink; I continued down the street and did a little peaceful window shopping.

Hallam Village was a great place for that, filled with dainty tea shops and an entire street full of sole traders selling bespoke and one-off items. I found a shop selling baby clothes and couldn’t resist, and after spending a fortune, I strolled some more.

The brief break away from the campus was just enough to clear my head. But my mobile chimed in my pocket and interrupted my peace. Plucking it out, I noticed a few missed calls and one message from Zena.

I opened the message.

Zena: Where are you?

Zena was taking her responsibilities too seriously. But I zipped my fingers over the keyboard and sent her a message back for her sanity.

Me: Hallam Village.

I continued striding down the high street. I felt the strangest feeling that I was being watched. My feet stopped in place and I turned, not quick to make it obvious. It was more of a dawdling pace. There was nobody there. Laughing to myself at my crazy thoughts, I continued on my way, looking at the wares and trinkets in the shops.
