My mobile chimed again, and I sighed as I read the message.

Zena: You need to get back here.

Sometimes Zena forgot I had my knights and in all seriousness needed nobody else for my security. But she was a good friend, and I didn’t want her getting into trouble with her boss. It could also have been because I was hungry and needed to eat that I responded the way I did.

Me: Just getting some food and then I’ll be back.

Pushing my mobile into my pocket, I strolled a little further down the high street, noticing the village was getting busier with students who had popped there for lunch, as well as locals who had the same idea to avoid the town as me.

My mobile dinged.

Zena: I need to speak to you. Ring when you can.

Me: Okay.

But picking up a sandwich for my lunch was my priority, and I made my way back to my car and the nice delicatessen I parked outside of.

I queued behind two elderly ladies. The first was buying some local made jams that had the name of a local farm imprinted on the jar. I waited patiently until she finally matched the preserves with two rustic loaves. She paid her bill, picked up her groceries, and I lingered behind the next woman while I looked at the choices I had to fill my sandwich.

I sighed as my mobile dinged again.

Zena: It’s urgent. I need to speak to you.

Me: I’m getting lunch and then I’ll meet you at the library in fifteen.

Finally, I picked the ham and salad sandwich on the same rustic bread the lady in front of me chose, hoping her taste buds were onto something. And with my sandwich in my hand, thoughts of going directly to the library and eating it there instead seemed a good plan.

I headed back to my car.

It’s urgent.

Zena wasn’t a worrier, she wasn’t clingy with me like Safir was.

Yes, she was careful and calculated, but she never came across as someone who panicked. She was a planner; she was methodical.

I picked my mobile up after placing my sandwich carefully on the passenger seat and I hit the call button.

“What’s the rush to meet?” I asked.

“You driving?” she asked.

“Not yet.”

“I was talking to Amanza. She’s dating a guy called Kyle,” she began.

I hummed because I wasn’t sure about the urgency of the call up to now.

“Anyway, Amanza thinks she saw… hmm, mm, no, just get here. I don’t want to tell you if you’re about to drive.”

There was silence as I was about to push her for more details, but Zena got in first.

“Meet me in the library.”

“Okay, like I said, I’ll see you in fifteen minutes.” I disconnected the call, looking at the screen until it went black. Sighing, I tilted my head back, resting it against the car headrest. Just a few seconds as I took in the tone of her words.

She was worried.

I started the engine and waited for the traffic to pass. The radio station turned on and was playing a Coldplay song, but I couldn’t relax wondering why there was such concern.
