“We’ll call Blake,” I said, and Lacey shot me a look. “He will help if he knows you’re staying here and protecting the baby.”

I nodded to Kane to make the call. There was no argument from him. He knew this was the right decision. His daughter’s life, our daughter, was worth more than not asking for Blake’s help.

Lacey knew it, too. I’d never met someone who wanted to be protected less than she did. And in all reality, she was a person who hardly needed our help. But this was more than Lacey right now, and she wasn’t arguing.

There was only one way out of all of this, and unless we were all pitching in, there was a chance of Aria being harmed. Not that I thought Ryan would harm her, but now he showed who he really was. None of us knew what he would do to get what he wanted.

And what he wanted was Lacey, not Aria.

As I held Lacey in my arms, I glanced around for a second. “We have to do this, Lacey. It needs to end.”

Lacey nodded as I sat her on the sofa. Words were too fucking hard with how much anger was coursing through me. She was hurting. I’d sworn I’d never let her get hurt again, but Ryan never made that promise. He was the actual devil in all of this. Blake was right, we’d assumed the dark king was the villain in this story, but the real villain was the one who was successful in glossing over who he was with brilliant success.

The door opened, and Clay walked through the door. His face was as distraught as Lacey’s.

“What happened? How did Ryan kidnap my daughter?” she asked. The tone of her voice was a mix of pain and anger.

Clay’s look was of hurt too, he took hold of Lacey’s hand. “The nanny was playing with Aria in the garden. I noticed the laughter and chatting had stopped and looked out of the window and saw Jenny on the floor with a wound to her neck.”

Lacey pulled a breath. “He killed her?”

“Wound,” Kane repeated.

Clay nodded. “She is in hospital... just alive. But has claw marks. Like the marks on your hips after the binding. You said he had fangs,” Clay said. Lacey gagged. I imagined she was wondering what he planned for her that night.

“Let’s go,” Kane barked the moment Clay said those words. “I’m not waiting any longer and Blake is meeting us there.” Kane grabbed the keys.

“Yes, let’s go,” I said.

Clay nodded, wrapping his arms around Lacey and leading her out of the door. “I’ll take Lacey home, where she is better protected. Call as soon as you have news.”

“I want to go too,” she said, looking into the car.

“No!” three voices said at once.

“This is about you, Lacey, not Aria. But it needs to end,” Kane said.

I clicked the door shut behind me and ran to the car. Kane jumped into the driver's seat and hit the ignition before I had time to pull on my seat belt. He glanced in the rear-view mirror and jammed the car into reverse and hit the gas. And we tore out of the small cul-de-sac for the journey.

Kane’s knuckles were white as he clenched his hands tight on the steering wheel. All I could do was stare ahead. As fear and hatred rolled through me, I willed the vehicle to go faster. Though the way Kane was driving, we were going to get there in half the time or get pulled over by the police.

The drive to the oak perimeter took longer than flying there, but preserving energy was the key to fighting Ryan, especially if he shifted into his wolf.

Kane skidded the car, the tyres screeching as he slammed the brakes hard. He practically unhinged the car door as he flung open the door. Racing to where Ryan stood.

Ryan stared at the car, waiting for Lacey to get out.

“She isn’t coming,” I said.

Something shifted in Ryan’s his eyes. Shock and confusion wrestled for control over his expression. He was shifting but trying to contain it.

There was a growl in the air and he lifted his head as he sniffed. His face nearly contorting into a wolf’s. It only took one blink, and he seemed to regain control over his body, but his eyes changed to a tawny yellow.

“Where is she?” He stalked toward me. It was the movement of an animal about to hunt his prey. His eyes did not leave mine and suddenly, in a hurry, he rushed to me.

Kane punched him in the face, and Ryan seemed confused by that. It was as though he hadn’t noticed he was there. But Ryan always had a grudge against me.

“Where is my daughter?” Kane shouted, his voice loud and harsh. Ryan turned to him and smirked. The first punch hadn’t affected him and Kane launched his arm as he punched Ryan square in the jaw again.
