But if he didn’t, I had overheard Lacey speaking to Clay about reducing the effects of the bind.

Clay explained how hard it would be for Blake right now. He was the god of darkness; and he demanded, not begged. He manipulated the whole situation to his advantage and, to be fair to Blake, he did it extraordinarily well.

He played the game like the master he was.

Nobody suspected until the very end.

But now the master was at the point of checkmate and it appeared the queen was about to take the king, because as much as she hurt, she wasn’t giving up her knights.

I had many lifetimes of being enemies with Blake, then being friends with him, and now I wasn’t sure what we were. But he was so close to getting all he ever wanted but couldn’t do it because she refused to give Kane and me up.

He wasn’t what I expected, yes he loved her, there was no doubt. But this would not be easily forgotten. I reckoned the fact that she’d known Blake helped to save my life was the only reason she hadn’t panicked as he held Dante in his arms.

It was the only reason I hadn’t panicked.

But seeing the tears storming down her face, and now I could not leave this any longer.

He saved her life, my life, Aria’s life. He took lives to save her.

The least he could do was listen to me, listen to reason.

“Go to daddy, sweetheart,” I whispered into Aria’s ear as Lacey walked away. “This daddy needs to sort something out so mummy stays happy.”

I pressed Aria into Kane’s arms and hoped my injured wing would hold out.

“Why don’t you grow up and realise you can’t have your own way, regardless of who you are?” I yelled as I flew behind him. “Kane and I wanted her to ourselves. We’ve learned to live with it. And it’s good. You could be happy...” The word tasted bitter in my mouth as he stopped, turned around and floated in the air.

I glared at him.

“Of course, you’d be happy with it. You got your goddess, and you’re a lowly angel... a fallen one at that,” he said.

“And what are you? I’m a lowly fallen angel. Where are all the failed angels supposed to go?” I asked. “Of course, they go to your lowly realm. Which makes you the lowest of the low.”

“I’m still a god,” he growled.

“Then be a god and not a petulant child. Show her, prove to her what you’d do for her. What you’d give up for her,” I said bluntly.

“It’s easier for you,” he said. I felt my brow crease in confusion. “I’m supposed to rule over the darkness. How do I manage that when I have to share my love with two others, and angels at that?”

I snarled.

“My family could lose faith in me if they knew my brothers would stake a claim on my kingdom,” he said.

“You’ve ruled for an eternity. Let one of them take over. Who cares? Or we’ll help you keep it if you need to. Lacey will help you. Two gods fighting to keep light and dark in harmony. She doesn’t want things to change. She’d help you.”

Blake swallowed as he considered my words.

“She’s lifted the wards on the house, not only for Dante, but for you, too. She needs you, and we need her to be happy.”

Blake looked at me and into the distance. “I’ll think about it.”

I glared at him, expecting him to say something else. My jaw hurt from clenching it.

Waiting.

Irritability flashed in his palm, and I knew it was time to leave him to his thoughts. Blake saved my life, but I knew he could hurt me with his magic should he wish.

Especially if I had grated on his nerves.
