“I’m not getting to see you,” he said.

I smiled at that. “I miss you too. It seems ages since we actually saw each other and now I’m back home until the new university year starts.”

“You miss me?” he asked, lightly.

I closed my eyes, thinking of when we sifted and it was just me and him—and a horse—but the moment was purely magical. Resting my body against his chest, breathing in the fresh air, feeling his breath on my neck and his kisses on my cheek.

“Every day,” I said, because I did.

I heard as he smiled down the phone, the light breath that came from his nose.

“Which lucky bastard gets to sleep with you tonight?” he said.

I giggled.

“Nobody, I need to sleep. Ryan wasn’t too happy with that, but Kane and Seb were fine.”

“Ah, that’s good. Put your mobile on your pillow,” he said.

“Why?”

“Pillow, Lacey.”

I snorted. “You are so bossy.”

“You love it.”

“I do.”

“You need to sleep, but I want to spend some time with you and can’t, so the next best thing is I’m going to use my imagination.”

“Oh, go on.”

“We can talk to each other as long as we can and when you fall asleep. I can listen to you sleeping and pretend I’m with you.”

I chuckled. “There’s a bit of a romantic under that bossiness.”

“There’s a lot. Just waiting for you to want me,” he said, and I sucked in a breath.

“I want you. What makes you think I don’t?” I knew I’d kept him at arm’s length for the past few months, but it didn’t mean I didn’t want him. “I’ve had a lot going on the last few months with the king of the fae and the dragon prince. I was just happy to get home and a chill out for a while with no problems.”

“And the dark king, has he given you any problems?” he asked.

I smiled, and I tried to hide the sound that came from my mouth. “None and I think I’m getting closer to working out who he is because I don’t think he is Gray Trent anymore,” I said and hesitated.

“Why?” Blake interrupted before I responded.

“He said some things to me that made me think he was, but I’m thinking that he wants me to think he is. But I know he definitely isn’t now.”

“At least you’ve ruled him out. What changed your mind?”

“Too many things to mention,” I said with a yawn. I pulled the duvet further over my shoulders and curled up as much as I could. “But I haven’t ruled out the vamp king.”

“Sounds intriguing. So the dark king still speaks to you?” Blake asked.

“We haven’t spoken for a while, come to think of it.” I ran my tongue over my bottom lip. “I wonder why?”

“Mmm, don’t get worried about it. It’s a good thing, isn’t it?”
