“Or you really would kill them.” I said, knowing it was the truth.

He nodded.

“She’s been dreaming a lot lately. She saw her father alive.”

“Yes, that’s the memory I stole from her. Her father, I mean Dan, blinked and as she held his hand, then he rubbed his thumb over her finger. He wanted her to know he was alive. My brother was a good father to Lacey, but once he found out who she really was, it also consumed him. He became obsessed.”

“Obsessed?” I squinted, and I must have looked confused. I was confused. This was the man raising her.

“He saw just how powerful she was and helped her develop it. But he never stopped, constantly putting pressure on her for it to grow. Desperate for it to happen faster. He hated her doing the ballet, but Elizabeth insisted. Dan only wanted Lacey to become faster, stronger, more magical. He claimed it was to help her, but secretly, I think it was his own ego. He felt he was the one who was strengthening her.”

I blew out a breath. “And where are they now?”

“They have a cottage on the grounds.”

“With a stream nearby?” I asked.

“Yes.”

I nodded. “I’ve run past it. And what will happen when she lives here permanently?”

“They aren’t dead, Kane, but they continued living in this area. But for that, they can’t leave the area designated to them, apart from once a week. And then I veil them to prevent them being recognised.”

“And will you tell Lacey?” I asked.

Clay rubbed his index finger over his stubble chin. “I’ll have to think how that might happen.”

I nodded.

Clay looked up at me. “But you have to let me tell Lacey. Trust me.”

“You were going to let her die.” I said.

Clay shook his head. “I wasn’t. I wanted to know what you would do for her and for your child.”

“You tested me,” I hissed.

“Yes Kane. I should have been stronger for Lacey. I should have insisted she remained with me. But I didn’t.” Clay hesitated. “I’ve been waiting for her mate bonds to turn up. I actually believed Carter was one. Now I know for sure you are one.”

I nodded. “I know.”

“Do you know the others?” Clay asked.

“Why?” I asked, because I knew who was always there.

“She needs to bind with the others too,” Clay said. I grimaced, and he sighed as he looked at my face. “Kane, if you want Lacey forever, she needs to fight the dark king and you will need the extra help, too. Once she is twenty-one, the mate bond will kick in and he will claim her. Because he will not share her.”

“Or the alternative?” I asked.

“Tell me who the others are and we arrange for Lacey to bind. Once all binds are in place, we will flush him out and kill him.”

Chapter 8

Lacey

Iwokeupfeelinggroggy. I raised my hand and swiped my head, feeling my damp hair sticking to my forehead.

I needed a shower so badly, but my body felt like it did the day after I fought the demon.
