“Your kingdom can’t remove a bind. He’ll be fine once the spell breaks.”He paused for a moment, and my spine straightened as I waited for what he had to say next.“Until then, they can try to remove how the person feels by inserting a false memory which you know all about. But I would imagine that is all.”

“You can’t know what our kingdom is capable of. I’m unsure myself,”I said.

“Because you aren’t tapping into your strengths. They taught you a lot from an early age, but your real magic is still in its infancy. You should test yourself, believe in yourself.”

“Are you saying I could help Carter heal his pain and heal my own?”

“I am. Until the end of the spell, only you can remove the bind. You are powerful, Lacey. You could have helped yourself against the king of the fae. Your eyes are your most powerful asset.”

“You’re trying to help Carter,”I said and thought of that for a moment. I didn’t know how I could remove a bind, but he did, and I was glad he was telling me there was a way I could help Carter. Could the dark king be Ryan and he actually wanted to help Carter? I’d always thought Ryan’s feeling for Carter were more than he admitted to. I laughed.“Can my eyes stop you?”

He chuckled in response.“Stop me from doing what, exactly?”

“Whatever you can do?”

“Nobody can stop me, Lacey.”

“I was told your magic is slow,”I said.“And mine is fast.”

“But mine is dark and can be evil, whereas yours is light and... not evil,”he said with a hearty laugh.“Now, if you were light and evil, yes, you’d defeat me. I need to go and I’ll leave that information with you. Think about how you can help Carter. I trust you to do whatever it takes to help him.”

“And help you,”I said.

“And me,”he said.

“Thank you, bye,”I said.

I was now saying goodbye to the dark king. What the fuck was happening?

“Bye, Lacey. One day.”

I smiled to myself.

“What put a smile on your face?” Ryan said as he reached the place next to me.

Was it a coincidence he got there at exactly the same time I finished the conversation?

I shook my head because I could hardly tell him I was having a pleasant conversation with the dark king, but I stared at Ryan. Did he already know that? I could only think of Carter’s words.

“Thinking about the king of the fae again.” Ryan pushed his bag onto the floor and took the seat next to me.

My eyebrows furrowed instantly. Was he trying to put me off? Was he trying to make me think Gray was the dark king? “Why would you even think that? I’ve not thought about him for weeks,” I said and stared ahead. “Talking of fae.”

Ryan glanced ahead.

“Hi Lacey, can I join you?” Her eyes widened at seeing Ryan.

“Of course, you’ve met Ryan, haven’t you?”

“I don’t believe I have,” she said with a twinkle in her eye and now I realised Zena, the Amazonian warrior, was a minx.

Holding my palm to Ryan. “Ryan, one of my knights, and Zena, my fae friend.”

“Pleased to meet you, Zena,” Ryan said with a smile.

“Likewise,” she replied. “Don’t you have some delicious knights?”

I reared my head as I laughed out loud. “This one is out of bounds.”
