“Ah, he’s a bound knight.”

“Not yet, but he will be,” I said.

Ryan squeezed my thigh, and I turned to him, and he smiled. But I wasn’t sure if he really would be anymore.

“Have you seen Carter?” I asked. “He’s on campus today.”

Ryan gulped. He never told me what they said between the two of them when he went to visit Carter and I kept out of it. It was none of my business. But now Carter’s words had my curiosity spiked.

“Call him and have a coffee,” I said, trying to work out his reaction. “It’s fine with me.”

But my senses picked up an almighty scream that sounded like it came from the building entrance. I looked around and nobody else seemed to hear it. My instinct kicked in and I picked my bag from the floor and took out my mobile.

Throwing my bag under the table, I sent a quick text to Kane. I knew he’d deal with the rest from the other side. Then I thought of the dark king, trusted myself, and sent the same message using telepathy to all my knights.

I cast my eye to the door of the library, close to where I sat. I knew this time I didn’t need the help of My Gods, I only needed protection on the door.

He said my eyes were my strongest asset.

I perused my gaze around the double doors and said. “Make this door feel like unmovable stone.”

And that was my first failing. I should have made it actual stone. Because my heart and breath were in my mouth, seeing at least ten soldiers running towards the invisible barrier. I let out that breath and my heart started pumping hard again as they all ran into the invisible wall once more.

“Who are they?” I asked Ryan.

“No idea,” he said as he stared at the soldiers getting back on their feet at the doors. Before they bunched together, and as they ran, there was a collective scream around the room. I exhaled a relieved murmur when the barrier didn’t budge.

But the scream intensified when another man walked up to the wall, and he glanced into the library. Petrified students hid under their desks and some ran behind bookcases.

His handsome gaze landed on me.

He smirked and never looked away. He said something to his men and his soldiers took their guns from their shoulders and aimed at the solid stone wall.

Chapter 2

Seb

Mymobilechimed.

Kane: Lacey sent a text. She’s barricaded with Ryan in the library. Get yourself there. I’m on my way.

Of course, I already knew she sent me a message telepathically. I didn’t respond to Kane because he knew I’d be on my way and I knew the same about him. I ran as fast as I could and once I got there I threw myself under a bush. A second later a body rolled into mine.

“Who are they?” Carter asked. My mouth dropped open seeing him.

“No idea. They might not be here for Lacey, but she’s had a bit of trouble with vampires and fae lately, so it could be either,” I replied.

Carter raised his eyebrows and nodded, like he knew something I didn't. “I saw her with the fae king. He looked smitten. I don't know… maybe she did.”

“Nah, she wasn’t. Blake noticed her eyes weren’t doing that thing they do when she’s with someone she likes.”

Carter sighed and glanced away. “Oh, I remember. I seem to have lost my touch already.”

“Don’t worry about it. I never noticed it either. I think Kane did, but he said nothing. He left the house and went looking for her.”

“How does Blake know?” Carter asked. “Sorry, it’s none of my business.” He quickly shooed the thought away with a flick of his wrist, and I was glad of that. I could hardly tell Carter the truth of our past lives.

“Where was she when Kane found her?” he asked.
