My head whirled with a light feeling.

It was Seb. Hewasthe dark king.

He despised Carter and what an effective way to get him out of the way than to take his life or at least try. Carter tried to forewarn me about Ryan, but he got it wrong. It was Seb he should have warned me about.

I peeked up at Seb. His fist sank to his hip and dangled beside him, his face deformed with impatience as his lips curled back as he glared back at me.

Sometimes, I wished we didn’t have this stronger connection that we did, because right now; he identified with exactly what I was thinking, and I noticed my thoughts were making him livid with rage. I’d never seen him look so savage, never seen him look so deadly. I looked away from his face and glanced down at his fist as he opened and closed it as though he suddenly realised how he looked.

“I’m not the dark king,” he growled again.

“Mmm,” I whispered. I wasn’t panicking anymore about being wrapped up inside Seb’s wings. I wasn’t fearful of Seb, regardless if he was the dark king, because once again he saved me from the vampires.

He wanted to protect me, not hurt me.

But it still didn’t stop the need to know the truth, the need to know who he really was.

“Are they finished yet?” I asked, trying unsuccessfully to view over his wings once more.

“Blake is still outside with Ryan,” he replied.

“Okay, then let me go,” I answered, pushing into his solid chest. He didn’t budge. “Let me look at you properly.”

“No, not until you accept I’m not the dark king,” Seb said.

“Why is it so important that I believe you? I’ll be yours in the end,” I demanded. My voice was jumping at what I was conceding to my adversary.

A vein in his temple throbbed a hasty tempo. His jaw ticked as I talked.

“If you are not the Dark King, why did you tell me I was wrong to bring Carter back from the brink of death?” I hissed. “You admitted you said I should have left him to die.”

“I already told you I didn’t want you to show others who you were,” Seb said, his voice was calmer than the look on his face.

“Which means you already knew who I was.”

“Let her go,” Blake said, and I knew he was ahead of me, though I couldn’t see him because of the bulk of Seb that encapsulated me within his body and large-winged frame.

Seb raised his hands from my back to my face, capturing my cheeks and lifting my chin to look at him.

“I always told you I knew who you were, but I couldn’t tell you how I knew.” He looked at the ceiling. “The gods, Lacey. I couldn’t.”

“Who are you Seb?” I whispered.

Chapter 21

Lacey

“I’llexplaintoyouproviding you agree not to run,” he announced, his eyes whizzed around my face. “Promise.”

“She won’t run,” Blake stated. “Let her relax and listen to what you have to tell her.”

His eyes veered from Blake’s face to mine as he stared at me. The surge and decline of his rib cage was hard and swift.

“Where’s Ryan?” he inquired, turning and searching over his shoulder.

“He’s taking the remains to be disposed of,” Blake answered. “I figured it was the easiest way to get him out of the house.”

“Did you vanish them?” Seb asked.
