The dark king?

“How do I know that? You’re the same,” I responded, racing my palm over his wings once again, “and you feel the same, your wings. You can communicate with me like he does.”

I sensed by the twitch of his mouth he was resisting the impulse to do something extra for me to accept him. But he knew me better than that. He recognised that would cause me to hold my ground better than I was.

“Lacey, I was furious with you for kissing him. Why would I do that if it was me you had kissed?”

“To put me off the scent.” I suggested, and my voice was more temperate than I expected. “You wanted me to think the Maxim Volkov was the dark king with no legitimate reason. You told me the dark king contacted you when he rescued me. But why you?... Because he didn’t, you rushed off and later arrived back in a car.”

“Lacey, Blake has nearly carried out his operation. Can we speak about it when this is over?” Seb requested.

“What's Blake doing? Can I look?”

“No, it’s best you don’t,” he replied. “Blake is pretty ruthless. There won’t be enough left to go back to Maxim. Maybe he will leave behind a messenger.” Seb faltered, and I considered his face. “Oh,” he whistled, squinting his eyes as he stared over my shoulder. “Maybe there will be nothing to go back.”

“And Ryan, is he still invisible?” I asked. I shuddered at my question and dread coursed through my veins, terrified to learn of his fate.

“No, he is helping heap the bodies up for Blake.”

Grimacing, I stated, “sounds ferocious.”

Seb barked a laugh, but he didn’t let me watch. He kept me bundled inside his rugged embrace, like a knight should.

But was he?

I still didn’t know.

Everything about him was comparable and screamed he was the dark king. Seb’s feathers looked leathery, but seemed surprisingly cool and velvety. I only got a part peek at the dark king’s wings and the sun was glaring down on the true colour, but they certainly felt the same.

I inhaled heavily as I mulled over what this meant. Because as much as he claimed he wasn’t the dark king, everything pointed he was deceiving me.

What was especially strange to me was that Blake and Ryan were going about their business, doing what they needed to do to eradicate the threat of the vampire king’s men, as though they hadn’t detected Seb.

I mean, was that conceivable?

Had they not noticed he looked taller than normal?

Not noticed he seemed broader than normal.

Not observed the little fact that he had sprouted two fucking enormous wings from his rear.

Did they always know?

Or was he undetectable to them?

I pumped out a gasp.

I got quieter the more I pondered about it. I was too surprised to say much more to Seb right now.

My pulse was pounding so roughly I could make out every beat that was made, even though they were in a sped up state inside my ears and I envisioned my blood as it thrashed so expeditiously, like rapids through my veins.

And I was confident Seb’s heart was strumming the same brisk speed.

Or was he the dark king?

The dark king communicated to me. Seb spoke to me, as did Carter.

Oh, my gods.
