I slugged another gulp of water and closed my eyes and sighed. “Why was I banished from the Upperworld?” I asked.

“You banished yourself,” Seb said.

“Why would I do that?”

“To be with me, you planned it. You didn’t want to remain in the Upperworld without me,” Seb said. “I was being exiled. So we agreed to leave together, and the gods banished us to the Middleworld to live another life.”

“Banished?” I asked, nodding. Thinking I understood. “So if I was a goddess and supposed to marry a god,” I said, glancing a look at Seb. “Who or what are you?”

Seb smiled. “I’m an angel. I was your guardian angel. Along with Kane.”

“With black wings,” I said.

Blake cleared his throat. Seb turned and looked at him.

“Well, to be truthful with you, I am now a fallen angel, Lacey.”

“Fallen... And Kane,” I asked.

“Kane is still a veritable angel of the highest order. They didn't exile him. They assigned him to protect and keep watch over you. The gods still demanded their goddess continued to be secure.”

Chapter 22

Lacey

“AndBlake, howdoyou fit into this? I appreciate you’re from my previous lives, as well.”

Blake’s pale azure eyes bore into mine, and a light smile tugged at his mouth. “I’m a guardian angel too. The gods sent me, but after Kane,” he said. “Once the gods punished Seb with enough time without you, you were reborn and the gods knew they needed more angels to protect you.”

Acknowledging Blake with a nod of the head, before I glanced out of the window again and noticed those oppressive clouds had now turned the day even darker and drearier.

I sighed and pressed my thumbs against my temple to rub away the ache formed from hearing more about myself.

Finding out who I really was.

Who Seb, Kane and Blake were.

I turned around and stared at Seb, looking at him, from his hair to his nose, his jawline and his chest and all the way down. Apart from the tight line of his lips, his face was expressionless, a gaze that scattered a deep chill down my spine, but there was also a strange tingle in my belly.

My Seb.

My love.

My fallen angel... Or was he secretly the dark king?

Was it him all along?

Would it be so bad if it was Seb? I would convince him we could be one big, happy family. There would be no more blood spilt, no more secrets, no more wars.

We could be happy.

“It’s not me,” he growled, his hands curling into tight fists making me tremble again and my stomach whirled as bile climbed to the back of my throat.

I swallowed my fear down and smirked. “Turn, show me your wings again,” I said.

He shook his head. “No, I shouldn’t have done it then. I’ve just told you everything I know and now I don’t know how that is going to affect me,” he said.

“Show me your wings,” I said to Blake. He shook his head, and no one spoke for a long moment, but there was a tension in the air that was so palpable it made my leg jittery. I tapped my foot against the ground to counter it.
