Finally, Blake broke the tension when he made a move toward me. “We will not shift unless you’re in danger. Showing our angels puts us in danger, too. That was why I had to kill all the vampires. I couldn’t afford for them to send that message back,” he said.

My eyes opened wide. I looked from Seb to Blake.

“We have to keep it secret, Lacey. Everything you’ve learned has to be kept to yourself for a little longer,” Seb said.

“Ryan saw,” I said. “You won’t kill him.”

“No, Ryan saw nothing. When he gets back, he will remember nothing about Seb,” Blake said.

“You’ve removed his memory?” I asked. “You can’t do that.”

“I had no choice, because I saw something in Ryan’s eyes when we were outside,” Blake said and stared, not blinking once. “He isn’t who he says he is.”

“Is he the dark king?” I said and met his gaze as I tried to make my voice sound as casual as possible, a nonchalance I didn’t feel. “He can’t be.”

“Why not?” Seb’s eyes flashed in anger, which made my shoulders stiffen, backing away as he rushed forward. “Why can I be, but not Ryan?”

I held my ground, standing firm, holding my shoulders back, my hands ready to create some magic... just in case. “You’ve got the wings,” I said dryly, tilting my head to one side with a pout of my mouth. “That could be a giveaway. You were much bigger when you were an angel and very similar in height to the dark king.”

Seb rolled his eyes to the ceiling. “I hid myself very well until you were in danger. Ryan hasn’t shown himself yet. He is hiding something behind his cute demeanour.”

I laughed out loud at the absurdity of two angel shifters who had hidden their true selves for such a long time were trying to move the onus onto Ryan. But I knew it was better to keep that opinion to myself. It could come in handy at a later date.

“Ryan is definitely hiding something,” Blake said. “Do you want me to unravel him?”

“You need to unravel yourself first,” I said with a nod of the head, urging him to reveal himself. Blake shook his head with a curve on one side of his mouth and I settled my head in my hands and peered through my fingers at him. “Unravel him?” I repeated. “Do you think magic is shrouding him? He wouldn’t get into my home if he was. The spells would have stopped him.”

My hand flew over my mouth, the sound of a slap against my skin echoed over the air. “My daughter. He has been near my daughter.”

“Lacey. You shouldn’t be talking like this here,” Seb said, meeting my stare with a shake of his head.

I rubbed my fingertips over my temples and nodded. What if they were right? “Carter warned me about Ryan, too. He said he didn’t think he was the person he claimed to be. But why don’t I sense it?”

“I might be wrong,” Blake said, suddenly backtracking. “He might have been in shock or surprised at the way things ended with the vampires.”

I rubbed my sweaty palms down on my leggings. The heat rising in me wasn’t from the weather, but from the rise of anger. “How can I be so gullible?”

“No, you’re not. The kingdom kept you in the dark. Also, you didn’t choose your knights. You were so oblivious to the dark king, you allowed your knights to be picked for you. Anyone who wanted you, wanted to be close to you, only had to be chosen as a knight,” Seb said. “I never understood Clay’s decision to not let you know.”

“Me neither, not with what was at stake, but I suppose he wanted me to have a normal life and he expected the dark king to be weaker than he was.” There was a moment of silence. “But what is unacceptable is that Clay couldn’t see through anyone?”

“The gods gave the angels their power. Much more powerful than Clay. He wouldn’t see through us. But Ryan isn’t an angel,” Blake said.

“Is he a god?” I asked, wondering if he could be the god of speed I kept hearing about.

“No, he doesn’t have any spiritualism around him. He is purely supernatural,” Blake said. “But we need to find out what he is, and quick.”

“Which means you could be wrong, and he is nothing more than my knight. A genuine knight, nothing more.” I thought of Aria for a moment. I couldn’t take any risks with her life. “Is that something you can do, Blake?” I chewed my lip for a moment and took another sip of my water. A peaceful, heavy silence enveloped us. Looking back to Seb and Blake and I watched as they glanced at each other.

I shook my head. “No, Ryan is fine. Clay would have seen through him. He saw through Lucas and unravelled him. He would have seen through Ryan. And the ward spells in my home would have known.”

“It’s up to you,” Blake said, running his palm across his stubble chin.

I slammed my elbows on the kitchen island and plunged my head into my hands. “I don’t know who anyone is anymore.”

“You can trust me, Lacey. I’ve always told you there was more to me I couldn’t tell you,” Seb said. “I didn’t keep you totally in the dark.”

“Lacey, I know you need to know about this, but your life is on the line again and we can talk about the past another time,” Blake said.
