Was Ryan, my sweet Ryan, truly with me for reasons that were not as honourable as he made me believe?

Seb and Blake had proved there was a deeper reason for not showing me who they were earlier on, but Ryan still hid his true self but wanted me to trust him implicitly. In his defence, Seb had only just shown me.

But if Ryan was hiding something negative, at least now my senses would zone into it. Because when the time came, I would take all his magic as Clay requested.

Was that why he asked me to?

Did Clay know all along that some of my knights weren’t as honourable as he hoped, or was this simply about my strength?

At least now I was mindful of this, and if Ryan turned out to be anything other than he let me believe he was, he would be too weak to make a move during the bind. But I would place a spell on myself for him to not take my magic.

I turned the car down the driveway and glanced at Seb, and smiled.

“We need to bind,” I said. I didn’t want to say it when I was back at the university.

Mainly because I’d kissed the dark king and something ignited inside me, something primal. I felt the need for him. I almost begged him how to break the spell, and that was only from a kiss.

And that was what I felt.

The mate bond I had with the dark king was strumming against my heart, loud and clear and totally frightening. He said we didn’t need to live in hell or darkness, but it didn’t matter. Because once Seb had showed himself to me, my life changed.

Everything changed once I believed him.

I wanted to fight the dark king, not only for Aria’s sake, but for each of my knights. I needed them more than I needed him.

I had to fight him with every method I could find. I had to fight him. I had to kill him. And in all reality, the sooner it happened, the easier it was going to be to my heart.

“I’m ready whenever you are,” Seb said, running a palm over my hand. “What about Ryan?”

“I need to have a think about it. I need his magic to fight the dark king, but I’m going to cast a spell for him not to take mine.”

“Or you could get rid of him now, not bind with him,” Seb said.

“But if you’re wrong, he is still a chosen knight and if I want to fight the dark king, I’m running out of time and the sooner it is all over, the better.”

He nodded, already knowing this.

“Will you bind in your angel form?” I asked, keeping my eyes focussed on the road ahead for a moment. There was a hesitation as I turned the car into the driveway and stopped the car. I turned around to see his face.

He cocked an eyebrow. “You’ve got a secret angel fetish. That’s a new kink.”

My head hit the headrest as I burst into laughter. “It was a question, not a request.”

He shrugged his shoulder. “I might not help be able to myself.”

“And maybe I’ll be fine with it,” I said and arched my eyebrow and gave a cheeky grin. “There is a possibility I have a little angel fetish. Maybe that’s why I fell for you in the beginning.”

“You do, and it was.” Seb grinned. “Whatever the lady wants.”

I pressed the gate fob and waited for the door to shift to the right, drove inside and parked the car outside the door.

“Tomorrow,” I said. “I need to spend some time with Aria.”

Because the bind would drain each of us of energy until the next morning and I wanted this night to be with my daughter.

“It’s a date,” he said. “Is Ryan coming back this weekend?”

I shook my head. “He needs to visit his uncle, a family emergency,” I said, shrugging my shoulders. “Have you heard anything about it?”
