Suddenly, a third man ruined the dynamics of what we had, and Blake was more dominating than me.

During that time, the dark king reared his presence again and Seb didn’t battle it out with him. He did what he did. He persuaded the goddess of light to die with him again. Because that was who Lacey was, the goddess of light and that was the reason the dark king or the god of darkness claimed they were mates.

I mean, who knew if they really were? There was a suspicion at one time he liked it when she was exiled. He liked to darken the world with his power whenever she wasn’t around. Though he claimed he was in mourning and couldn’t help the way he felt.

He never told me personally. I heard it from the gods in my dreams. The gods agreed the two gods were fated, but sometimes the higher deities weren’t as honourable as most people would believe.

I mean, every now and again, when they were feeling at their worst, they’d send the four horsemen out to create havoc on the world.

But right now, the gods weren’t my problem, but her choosing to bind with Seb was. Because she said she loved me, but she still let Seb take her life. And the gods knew the moment she was gone again, the dark days came, she was lost once again.

And that was my deepest worry about her binding with Seb. He’d have that hold over her again. It was a good enough reason to check with Clay he had locked away the sacred knives.

“Are you okay?” Lacey said, taking me out of my reverie.

I nodded and held out my arms. Lacey gave Aria a kiss on her cheek, pulling her closer to her chest and cuddled her with closed eyes, as a single tear slid down her cheek. My heart melted right then. Deep down, I knew she had to do this for her. She wasn’t going anywhere in this life because of Aria. Somehow, I believed Seb wouldn't get that hold on her again.

But she needed to fight the dark king, and I needed to help give her that strength.

“Did you put the barrier in the bedroom?” Lacey asked when she finally pulled away.

“I did. It worked when we spoke of trying for a baby. But don’t go anywhere else.”

Lacey smiled, kissed Aria once more, and handed her to me. “You’ve got her bottles and her comfort teddy, pram?” she said, quickly changing the subject. I nodded. “Okay, I’ll see you in the morning.”

“I love you Lacey, be careful,” I said as I turned to put Aria in her car seat.

“Love you too, Kane.”

Lacey smiled at me with Aria. I pulled her close to me kissed her hard on her lips. “Be careful.”

“Go,” she said and smiled. “I will see you both in the morning.”

“Do you want me to check in on you both later?” I asked.

“Would you? I am really nervous about it,” she said.

I wanted Lacey for myself, but I wanted this life to work out more than my selfish desires for that. And Seb and I got on better lately. It was as though the three of us together knew we could make it this time.

Ryan wasn’t as cohesive as he could be. He’d changed over the past six months. Not that I could persuade Lacey of that fact. She just thought he was going through some hard family times.

That’s what he told her.

Lacey waved at the garage door as I pulled away and out of the driveway.

I was going to meet Clay for the rest of the day, but first, we were taking Aria for a walk around the park, and then we were going for dinner.

Clay was the doting grandfather, and for me, that was mind blowing. Beautiful but mind blowing.

I’d never felt the love of my father. The only thing my father seemed to be worried about was Jack. I always expected that was because he left him at such a young age. Father's guilt kicked in well and truly, though he lived with me and treated me as though I wasn’t there either.

I never understood his choices.

Not that it bothered me too much lately. I didn’t dwell on it any more. I had my daughter now and I would never make his mistakes.

Clay was more of a father to me now. In fact, he was more of a father figure to Seb and Ryan, too. He seemed to know who we were, though I think it took him a while to realise Carter wasn’t who he thought he was.

The powers that be told him Carter was probably one of Lacey’s fated ones. Apparently, those powers were mainly his brother, Dan Summer, had somehow convinced him of that. That was until the moment Lacey told him about how my eyes reacted to her. Since then, he looked further into the history of the lost goddess and worked out I was one of her chosen ones, one of her real fated mates.
