“What was it like before?”

He hesitated. “We... We kept a low profile. After you and I were together in Cambodia. We traveled, a bit. But we stayed away from Rome and other major cities. We went to the Amalfi Coast.” He watched her face. Watched to see if that jogged any sort of memory. He hoped it did not.

“I see.”

“It is fairly easy to keep away from prying eyes in those places. And I have many residences.”

“Was I your dirty secret?”

She had been. But not because of the things they did together. Because of the things that she made him feel. He thought nothing of trotting out mistresses to the public. But he had felt protective of her from the beginning. And the thing between them had not felt common or indeed like anything he felt like sharing with the public.

He had not felt like sharing her.

He had shown her something in him he had hidden all his life, that night after his mother’s funeral. He had let her see him.

He had raised his barriers again after that, but he had...

He had felt the need to hide her, to hide them, to draw a curtain around them and keep that weakness she’d brought out in him a secret.

“So what exactly are you proposing?”

“That we go out. As a family.”

The smile that lit up her face felt like a stick of dynamite going off in his chest. “Yes, please. I would like that.”

“You’re feeling up to it?”

“I feel fine. Other than the fact that I cannot remember what has to have been the most significant year of my life, I feel wonderful. I’ve never been so happy.”

Krav brooded on that as they got ready to go into the city. She was still living in his house, but they were not sharing space. It was entirely different from when they had been in the midst of their affair.

She had often spent whole days naked in his villas. He would dismiss the staff for the week so that she could lounge by the pool and do nothing and he could come home from work to ravish her.

She had been all he wanted.

And he had certainly not thought of living with her when sex was not the primary objective.

How things had changed.

Though his desire for her had not. When she came down the stairs wearing a white dress that skimmed over her curves in an easy manner, and fell to her knees, his breath took a leave of absence.

And then there was the way she cradled the child...

“Would you like to hold her?”

“No,” he said.

Her smile faltered. “I don’t mind.”

“You missed the first month of her life. Hold her.”

“Okay,” she returned, keeping the child cradled to her breast.

He extended his arm, and the two of them walked out the front door, to the limousine that was waiting for them.

“This seems... I can’t even believe this,” she said.

She fussed around buckling Soriya in her car seat, and then looked at him, as if seeking reassurance.
