‘So are you going to come?’

‘God, no. I’m going back to the hotel to have a shower and get changed.’ He nodded towards the driver. ‘He’ll be back for you at eleven.’

Shopping turned out actually to be fun—though the assistant did try to steer her into capri pants.

‘No, not with my bottom,’ Alicia said.

‘Well, how about some shorts, in case you go on the water?’

‘I would feel like a sailor,’ Alicia said. ‘I like things loose... I like dresses...’ Her eyes lit on one. ‘I love this.’ She held up a silver dress which came to just above the knee. However, this was to be afamilydinner. ‘I think it might be more appropriate for a nightclub, though...’

‘Try it.’

The dress was beautiful. It slid like liquid mercury and it shimmered and it clung. And there was not a bra in the universe that could be worn under it.

‘Better not...’ Alicia sighed, but soon she was the owner of a gorgeous wardrobe suitable for a family weekend. It cost more than... Well, she didn’t dare add it up.

The assistant looked over her selection. ‘Oh, you’ll need flat shoes for walking, some wedges for the evening...’

‘No, I like heels.’

‘The streets are likely to be cobbled, with lots of steps.’

She didn’t care.

Alicia looked over the selection too. Shoes, so pretty, and some dresses, and sarongs rather than shorts, in case they went out on the water, and bikinis too. Then there were sets of underwear so divine she knew she would wash them by hand and love them for ever.

And the most gorgeous nightwear.

The assistant had smiled when she saw Alicia’s evident surprise as she’d held up a gold slip nightdress with a silk wrap to match.

Alicia was sipping iced tea when Dante called, watching as her outfits were wrapped in tissue paper and placed inside designer luggage.

‘Are you ready?’ he barked.

‘I think so...’

‘The car has been outside for fifteen minutes. I told you the plane departs at midday, Alicia.’

‘What happened to the flirting Dante?’ Alicia asked. ‘Or is that how you speak to your hired staff?’

She turned off her phone and placed it in her brand-new leather handbag. She would never jump to his command.

‘Actually,’ she said to the assistant, ‘I’ll take the silver dress after all.’

And sell it online.

Bastard.

‘Finally!’

Dante was sprawled on a seat when she boarded late, wearing a pale lemon shift dress, her black hair in a high ponytail tied with a strip of yellow velvet.

Then he pulled out his manners. ‘You look very nice.’

‘I’ll take that with a pinch of salt,’ Alicia said.

She was uncomfortable in such luxurious surroundings, and feeling defensive, and so underwhelmed by his reaction to her.
