“BecauseJefe, the man we have on the inside, was taken off the case. And I’m sure I don’t have to tell you who the case went to.”

Santos ran his hand down his face. JC was right, he didn’t need to tell him, he already knew. Mills.Fuck…

“What do you want to do?” JC asked his boss after a minute had passed.

Before he could respond, the door to the suite opened again, this time his nephew entered along with his band of miniidiotasfollowing him. His nephew was not as tall as Santos. However, they had the same dark hair and even darker eyes. The boy was scrawny, even more so because of his little habit he adopted. In fact, Santos could see it in the boy’s eyes, he was high right now.

“Uncle, don’t listen to a word this son of a bitch has to say. I’ll get the shipment back. Just give me a day or two, and I promise I’ll find out who betrayed us.”

Santos frowned and glanced at JC.What in the hell was he talking about…,he asked himself, using just his eyes? JC shrugged and shook his head.

“Leave us,” Santos billowed and waited for everyone to vacate the hotel suite, all but his nephew and JC.

Once the last man closed the door behind him, he held his nephew’s glossy gaze for a full thirty seconds before he backhanded him in the face. Miguel didn’t see the blow coming, therefore, he wasn’t ready for it and dropped to the marble tiled floor at Santos’s feet.

The sound of his nephew’s body dropping only fueled the anger deep within. He leaned over, grabbed Miguel by his hair and rained punches down to his face.

Miguel tried to block the punches to his mouth, his nose, his eyes, but he couldn’t. They were coming so quick and with such ferocity, he couldn’t do anything but take them and pray his uncle would stop.

Finally, Santos let go of his nephew and stepped away from the crumbled body. The boy was crying, holding his face. Santos spit on the floor next to Miguel’s head in disgust.

“You have caused me much grief over the last six months, boy,” he raged, his eyes baring down on his nephew. He could see the damage he caused and only wanted to beat him even more.

JC handed him a cloth, and he began wiping the blood off his hands. After his breathing was back under control, he continued speaking, tossing the towel at his nephew.

“First, you’ve fucked up multiple shipments, you’re sloppy, getting high on my shit, which you know I do not tolerate. Then I’ve been hearing rumors about Muñozmaricónstrying to take over my territory. Working with them was your idea. This is your fault, now I have to clean up your mess. And then you go and fucking kill thatpuntaof yours and leave a witness.”

The look of shock on Miguel’s face only pushed him into more violence. He sprang forward, ready to kick the shit out of the heap of mess before him, but Miguel managed to scramble away. He climbed to his feet, his hands out in surrender.

“I’m sorry,Jefe.I didn’t know someone was there. I only saw Ansley on the security feed.”

“And you beat her to death?” Santos asked him.

Miguel, despite the pain in his face, frowned and stood as straight as he could.

“She was stealing from me, uncle. What else should I have done?”

Hearing that information calmed him slightly. He understood why his nephew beat her, but to leave her there was careless.

Miguel, seeing that his uncle was calming, relaxed his shoulders only slightly. His uncle was very unpredictable, and he needed to remember that and stay ready. He bent down and picked up the towel his uncle had thrown at him and started holding it to his mouth.

Santos studied his nephew for a long moment before he blew out a breath and allowed his temper to subside. He ambled over to the bar and poured his favorite tequila into a glass. He took the contents down in one gulp and poured himself another.

Finally, he placed his eyes back on his nephew.

“I thought you said your girlfriend was kidnapped. You said one minute she was home, the next she wasn’t. There was no trace of her anywhere. No evidence she had left. You filed a police report for fuck’s sake.”

“I know, and that’s what I thought,” Miguel explained. “I mean, you saw the footage. She didn’t leave out of the front or back. None of the windows were disturbed. It was the only thing I could think that happened.”

“But she showed up out of the blue.”

“Yes.”

“And did you ask her where she was all this time? It’s been six months since she vanished. Is that correct?”

Miguel started to look nervous. He glanced at JC then back at his uncle before he responded. “Uh, yes it has been that long. But I did not get the chance to ask her. I saw she was stealing from me, and I just snapped.”

“And your reason for leaving her body there, of not searching the house?”
