“Whew,” Maddie said, wiggling her brows. “You guys back on?”

Reluctantly, I pulled my gaze away from Blaise and turned back to the table, though I could still feel the intensity of his stare on me. It was burning into my side, begging me to look back over at him. And while I wanted to, I didn’t want anyone to suspect anything.

João had already taken care of Skylar for that particular reason.

“No, we’re not back on,” I said, tucking some hair behind my ear and hoping that they would drop it. But knowing their annoying asses, they definitely wouldn’t. I had all the drama that my friend group could ever want.

Hell, I was still being blackmailed for writing smut by Redwood’s bad boy! For crying out loud, it didn’t get better than that in those sleazy, drama-crazed romance books either.

“Hmm, really?” Piper said, grinning from ear to ear and leaving closer to me. “Is that why he’s coming this way?”

My cheeks flamed red, and I sat up taller. “What do you mean, he’s coming this way?!” I whisper-yelled, shielding my face from his direction and hoping to the Redwood gods that she was kidding.

Shehadto be kidding, right?

“Vera,” Blaise said to my left, his deep voice sending shivers down my spine.

All I could remember was how he had touched me inside Mr. Avery’s classroom, how he’d degraded me like I had wanted, and how he’d kissed me so passionately afterward.

Maddie giggled and playfully kicked me under the table. “Oh, Vera!”

I cut my glare to her, then reluctantly glanced up at Blaise. Even though he had come into the cafeteria moments ago, he had on his backpack and his skateboard in his hand, like he was already about to head out.

“Y-yes?” I asked, looking around at everyone staring.

And when I said everyone, I meanteveryone, because nobody could haveanyprivacy at Redwood Academy. Everyone knew everyone’s business. I was surprised João was able to keep my little sexcapades with Blaise under wraps so well so far.

Blaise pulled a notebook—my notebook that he’d kept stealing—out of his backpack and placed it on the cafeteria table in front of me. “You dropped this on your way to the library during History. Thought I’d return it to you.”

I narrowed my eyes at the notebook, then raised my gaze once more to meet his. “Thank you, Blaise. Howkindof you,” I said with sarcasm.

He gave me his infamous smirk and walked away. “No need to thank me. I left a surprise inside for you.”

Somehow, my cheeks warmed even more. I clutched the notebook hard in my hands and stared down at it, hoping that nobody else had heard what he said, outside my friend group. When he left the cafeteria and everyone turned away, I pulled the notebook to the edge of the table and peeked.

On the first page, a single Plan B pill lay in a plastic baggie along with a sticky note that read,I would apologize for coming inside you, but I’m not sorry. You feel too good. I’d do it again.

Taking three Plan B pills within the span of two weeks probably wasn’t healthy for me, but neither was getting pregnant right now. So, I sneakily tossed it into my mouth and swallowed it with a gulp of water.

Still, I couldn’t help but read his little note again. And again. And again. Looking way too into it even though I shouldn’t, finding little things that he probably hadn’t really meant. Blaise Harleen thought I felt good.

Not my pussy.

Me.

What a charmer that boy is.Not.

ChapterThirty-Three

VERA

“Yay! João’s home!” Ana, João’s little sister, shouted, hurrying to the door and standing on her tiptoes to open it up later that night. When she yanked it open, she sprinted out into the front yard all by her lonesome. “Landon and Kai are here too!”

Instead of running to João like I expected, she ran right into the arms of Kai, the quiet kid in Poison’s. He picked her up and spun her around, making her giggle. I grabbed my belongings from the living room and stood in the kitchen, waiting to go home.

“Thanks,” João said, cigarette in his mouth. He pulled out his wallet. “We had to take care of someone.”

“Speaking of taking care of people …” I said, lowering my voice so Ana wouldn’t hear. I inched closer to him and zipped up my coat. “What’d you do to Skylar? She wasn’t in school today.” Not that I was really complaining about that.
