When the door closed, Callan grabbed me by my collar and shoved me against the wall. “If you speak a fucking word about this to anyone, I will fucking kill you. You understand?”

Still, his threats were empty.

At least, to me they were. I didn’t doubt that he would kill anyone else. He had ties to the Redwood mob, who had done far worse things than kill a couple people. But good ole Uncle Callan wouldn’t hurt me.

“You don’t mention anything about Vera to Redwood, then your secret is safe with me.”

He growled, but shoved me toward the door and straightened out his suit. Apparently, Aunt Georgina had done more to piss him off than anything I’d expected.

“Get the fuck out of my classroom and send Sakura in.”

Finding my way out of his class, I held the door for Sakura to enter. “Have fun.”

She murmured something so quiet that I couldn’t hear and disappeared into his classroom. The bell rang through the building, and suddenly, students spilled out into the hallways. A group of freshmen and sophomores walked in my direction, and I spotted Mateo surrounded by a couple of girls.

“Hey, Blaise,” Mateo called.

“You wanna play Raid of Durnbone tonight?” I asked, needing to find an excuse to show up at Vera’s front door tonight. As far as I knew, she had plans with João, and I wanted to get there before he did.

I needed to see what the fuck that was all about.

Not only that, but Mateo was also a pretty cool kid to hang with. He didn’t have drama like the rest of these fuckers did at Redwood. I’d order a couple pizzas, and maybe it’d repair some of the damage that Skylar had done.

ChapterThirty-Two

VERA

Blaise must’ve gotten in trouble with Mr. Avery because he didn’t meet me in the library to work on the project. Or maybe he’d decided to skip because of what had happened in that empty classroom when he … kissed me.

I walked down the hallway toward the cafeteria at lunchtime and brushed my fingers over my lips. We had kissed before whenever we had sex, but this time, it was different. And by the look on his face, I knew he’d thought so too.

Once I collapsed onto one of the red stools connected to the table, Piper plopped down in front of me. “I know we always mess with you about Blaise, but Maddie supposedly has herself a guy too.”

“Her best friend’s brother?” From our table, I spotted her in the hallway and smirked. “She thinks she’s being sly, but they are so obvious. Oh God. Like, waaaaytoo obvious. Her brother is going to find out sooner or later.”

“And you know how possessive he is of her,” Piper said. “Especially with one of his hockey buddies. That’ll be a screaming match and a half at their house when the day finally comes.”

I scrunched my nose and took a sip of water from my bottle. “You know it.”

When Maddie was finished swapping spit with the captain of the hockey team, she bounced into the cafeteria and sat next to Piper. “So, did things finally work out with Redwood’s steamy—”

Before she could finish asking me anything, João walked over to our table.

“The deal’s done,” João said, tapping the table. “I’ll drive you to my place after school.”

When João sauntered to Poison’s designated table in the back of the cafeteria, Maddie snapped her head to me and smirked. “Okay, Ms. I Don’t Want Any Drama, My Senior Year Is Going to Be Boy-Free, what was that?”

Piper nudged Maddie and winked. “And he’s going to drive her home too!”

I snatched some cheese-and-chive crackers from her and tore open the packaging. “Oh my God. You guys are so annoying. He just wants me to watch his sister tonight. Nothing is going to happen. He’s not even going to be home.”

Maddie and Piper side-eyed each other and grinned. “Suuuure.”

After rolling my eyes, I shoved a cracker into my mouth and looked up as Blaise stepped into the cafeteria. I sat up taller, spotting his swollen eye that had turned purple, and forced my thighs together.

With his backpack thrown over one shoulder, he sauntered toward a table in the back, opposite of Poison, where other rich kids sat. I guessed he hovered between the skateboard punks and thetoo rich for their own goodkids.

As he sat, he made eye contact with me. I stared back at him and pressed my lips together, my stomach still fluttering from our kiss. I didn’t know what was wrong with me because one second, I hated him, and the next, I wanted more of him.
