“You’ll have to go through me.”

Noah sighed. “As you wish.” His gaze flicked to me, conveying his meaning without saying a word.

Already of the same mind, I grasped Moira by the arms and lifted her out of the way. She let out a surprised gasp, kicking me in the shin when I set her down. I didn’t mind. It was a small price to pay and likely wouldn’t even bruise. Either way, the obstacle between Sunday and us had been removed.

Noah tried the door, but it didn’t budge. “Locked? She never locks the door.”

We exchanged uneasy glances.

“Break it down,” Noah snarled. “Something isn’t right.”

Kingston got there before me, shouldering the wood and splintering it in one go. He stalked inside and we followed, fear instantly finding a home in my gut at the sight of the open balcony doors and the empty room.

“Sunshine?” Kingston called, his voice holding a frantic edge as he searched the adjoining bathroom. “It’s empty. She’s not here.”

Noah stood inside the walk-in closet, staring down at his hands. “She left us.”

“What the fuck are you talking about?” I looked at the vampire, unable to comprehend a word coming out of his mouth. After all she’d been through to get us together, why would she up and leave?

“Her bag. It’s gone.” He shook his head and locked eyes with me. “She fucking left us.”

Moira sighed. “Of course she did. She overheard you idiots talking about killing the baby.”

I rounded on her. “You knew?” Somehow containing my anger, I strode toward her, backing her into a corner. “Youknew?”

“She told me everything. I can’t believe you’d do this.”

“Are you trying to get her bloody killed?” Noah snarled.

Moira tilted her chin up. “I was protecting her fromyou.”

“Are you fucking stupid? You know how many people are after her. Regardless of your thoughts about us, you never should have let her go off on her own.”

Moira wilted, though her voice still held a small tinge of defiance. “She was leaving no matter what. And I didn’t let her just run off without protection. I cloaked her scent. No one who isn’t here should even know she’s left the house and be able to track her down.”

“Next time help her by staying the fuck out of it or coming to get one of us,” I said, my worry giving my voice a biting edge. My berserker was right there, just under the surface. I needed to keep a hold on my control for everyone’s sake.

“Why? So you could lock her up until the time came? Sorry, no dice, boys. Tits before gits.”

I gritted my teeth and fought the urge to shake her. “We would never harm her or the baby.Never.”

“That’s not what Sunday heard.”

“Then she wasn’t listening very closely, because we were quite clear in our position.”

She swallowed. “Oh.”

“Fuck this,” Kingston said, shedding his clothes as he headed toward the balcony. “Someone get the priest.” Then he jumped, transitioning from man to wolf in one seamless bound as he went over the railing.

KINGSTON

Icaught the scent of her blood the second my paws hit the damp grass.

Fuck, Sunshine. What did you do to yourself, baby?

The distinct smell of Sunday was strongest on the trellis. Clearly my girl had cut herself up in her rush to get away from us. Guilt and pain hit hard. She’d wanted to escape us.
