“Dream.”

We all said the same name at the same time, silence hanging in the air.

Then we started laughing.

“Makes sense we’d all been thinking about her,” Duncan said. “I mean, she did just get back in town. But why the hell were you guys being so conspiratorial about it?”

I laughed. “This asshole,” I gave Jay a playful shove he didn’t appreciate, “told me last night when he dropped me off that he was into her.”

“You skipped the part where you were going on about her the whole way to your place,” Jay responded. “But the how doesn’t matter. What does is that all of us are into the same woman.”

“That’s not the only part that matters,” Duncan said. “We’re into the same woman who’s been off-limits for as long as we’ve known her, because we were supposed to be looking out for her - not hooking up with her.”

“It’s weird as hell,” I said. “But that makes it kind of hotter, you know? She’s forbidden fruit. And I’m ready to take a bite.”

Duncan groaned at my words. “So, you guys spent the drive talking about how much you both want Dream.”

“Not exactly how it happened,” Jay said.

Duncan shook his head. “Man, older brothers really got to do all the thinking for you guys, huh?”

“What’re you talking about?” I asked.

“Did you two stop to think why she was back in town?”

I scrunched my forehead, trying to figure out what he was getting at.

Then it hit me. I let out an ohhh in realization.

“She’s here because she just broke up with Adam,” Jay said, nodding his head slowly. “Meaning, there’s a damn good chance she’s not even thinking about getting involved with someone right now.”

“Right,” Duncan replied. “Here you guys are getting all wrapped up in how much you want to get her into bed. But don’t forget she’s a person with her own wants.”

“And she’s as independent as they come,” Jay agreed. “One of her best features, really.”

But I wasn’t about to be discouraged. “Hey, what if she needs something to take her mind off all the bullshit she’s just gone through with Adam? You know, come back to town and have a little fun.”

Duncan nodded slowly, as if considering the idea. “Maybe. She’s the only one who can decide that. But even if she was in the mood for a rebound, there’s still the issue of there being three of us and one of her.”

“She’s a big girl,” Jay said. “She can choose who she wants.”

“And we’re all going to be OK if she picks someone who’s not us?” Duncan asked. “You know how competitive we all get. Especially with one another.”

I grinned, sitting back and letting an idea play in my mind.

“Oh no,” Jay groaned. “Evan’s thinking. Never good when this happens.”

“Nah, you guys are going to like this one.”

“What is it?” Duncan asked.

“Well, here’s the deal. We all want Dream. Let’s forget about the fact our parents were married - briefly - we’ve all been wanting her for the last ten years, right? Long before our folks even noticed one another.”

“Sure,” Jay admitted.

“Then why don’t we all have her?”

“You’re kidding,” Duncan said. “How the hell are we supposed to do that?”
