DUNCAN

The horn on Evan’s car blasted outside of my house.

“Sheesh, dude!” I shouted from my bathroom. “Easy, already!”

Without even a few seconds pause after the horn stopped, a text message lit up my phone – from Evan, of course.

Yo, we’re here! Get your ass in gear, dude!this was followed by five “fire” emojis.

Sometimes I couldn’t help but laugh at Evan’s exuberance. I also couldn’t really blame him. I was just as excited to get to the farmer’s market and see Dream as he was.

I took one last look in the mirror, making sure I didn’t miss any spots during my shave, then headed out of the bathroom and my house, grabbing my keys, Seahawk’s cap, and sunglasses on the way out.

Sure enough, Evan and Jay were out front, the top down on Evan’s red convertible, Motley Crue blasting from the speakers. I turned my ball cap around, shaking my head as I approached the car.

“You want to wake the neighborhood, dude?” I asked.

Evan laughed, turning down the music. “Come on, man! It’s Saturday and we’re going to have some fun! Now, get your ass in the car. The faster we get moving, the faster we get to see Dream.”

He was right about that. To my surprise, just the thought of being able to see her was enough to make my heart skip a beat with excitement. I vaulted over the side of the car, landing in the back. Jay was in the front seat, and he turned his head to greet me with a quick nod.

“Let’s goooo!” Evan shouted as he turned the volume back up and drove off.

The music was loud enough that we didn’t get much of a chance for conversation. That was too bad – I wanted to ask Jay how his time with Dream had gone the evening before. He’d been the one to tell us about the farmer’s market, after all.

I tried to get a sense of what was on his mind by glancing at his expression from the backseat. Jay was as hard to read as they came, and with his eyes hidden behind a pair of mirrored aviators, the job wasn’t any easier.

We drove on, Evan singing at the top of his lungs to the music. When we pulled into the beach parking lot everyone there turned to stare at the convertible blasting music. Evan found a spot and when he killed the engine it took me a moment or two to adjust my ears to the relative silence.

“You’re gonna blast your eardrums out with that shit,” Jay chided with a smirk as we climbed out of the car.

“Nah – you listen to it loud, and it makes your ear drums tougher.”

That got a laugh out of me. “Dude, that’s not a thing.”

Evan pshhhed and waved his hand through the air as he went over to the trunk to take out a cooler and some folding chairs. Once he passed them out, we were on our way down to Dream’s booth. A steady stream of people was making their way down the path that led from the parking lot to the beach, and when we joined them, we saw just how packed the place was. Dozens and dozens of stands were set up, hundreds of people there shopping and eating and enjoying the mild, unseasonably warm morning.

“So,” Jay said. “She was down this way if you guys want to follow me. Hopefully the pricks that tried to steal her spot yesterday aren’t there this time.”

I chuckled at the idea, already seeing how something like that could’ve played out. No doubt Jay had put the guys in their places right quick.

We headed down into the market, the smells of good food and the pleasant din of the crowd filling the air. Jay took the lead, and it wasn’t long at all before we spotted Dream at her booth. She was busy at work painting the cheek of some cute kid, a long line of others waiting for their chance snaking around the nearby booths.

Damn, did she look good. Dream was wearing a pair of tight jeans, hinting at that gorgeous ass underneath, and a long-sleeved top that dipped low enough to show off just enough cleavage to leave a guy wanting more. She smiled brightly as we approached, saying something to the boy she was working on before hurrying over and letting out a squeal of delight.

“There you guys are!” she shouted as she gave each of us a hug.

“What, you think we wouldn’t show up?” I asked when it was my turn, savoring the sensation of her petite but curvy body against mine.

“I mean, I knew you’d all come. But I was getting a little anxious, I guess.”

Her eyes flicked over to Jay. “Hey!” she said.

“Hey.”

A few beats of silence passed, making it more than clear that somethingwas going on between the two of them. I did my best not to laugh, not wanting to bring up anything awkward.

I couldn’t help but wonder though if something had happened last night.
